Once you've watched liberals long enough to understand how they think -- scratch that, how they feel -- they become extraordinarily predictable.
To begin with, the liberal agenda is, in many respects, the same as it was in the thirties. Whether you call it communism, fascism, socialism, liberalism, or progressivism, the only real difference is how much they believe they can get away with, the way they sell it to people, and the latest trendy name for what they believe.
So, once the liberals pick a policy from their stale program to push, the next step is to get it implemented. This is where liberals have problems because whether a policy makes sense, is practical, or actually improves people's lives is of secondary importance to them. What is important to liberals is whether supporting or opposing that policy makes them feel good about themselves.

You want to see a lib get his back up?
State these undeniable truths about liberalism to him:
1) The core of liberalism is using force to make the responsible and innocent pay for the consequences of the irresponsible choices of others.
2) Liberals support no individual freedoms outside of those related to consequence-free sexual behavior choices. All other individual actions are to be controlled, taxed and punished.
What gets me is the frickin’ everyday morons that vote for the fascists.
Every single one of them that I’ve talked to has this mentality:
Yes, I support [socialist] policies X,Y,and Z, but I’m not a socialist, and neither are the democrats.
Although that just got a little harder for them.
Seriously, this author, Hawkins, must be reading my posts on FR!
( ;=) )
Every point he makes is one that I’ve held and voice on here often. OK, OK, so he’s not stealing my ideas. But it was a GREAT article.
Genuine Liberals are almost all control freaks. Their blind followers are usually those who want something for “free”.
I like John but he is a poor writer, I’m thinking at 8th or 9th grade level.
I’m not surprised he is popular on FR.
Well-reasoned observations.
"Much of the social history of the Western world, over the past three decades, has been a history of replacing what worked with what sounded good." --Thomas Sowell
My observations of liberals over several decades caused my "Theory of Liberals".
Without going into detail, my theory is that a liberal is a person who lacks the gene required by humans to process the reality of a situation. The empirical evidence supporting the theorys premise is overwhelming.
No, you’ve put it quite well. I find this more often in women than men, as unpopular as it may be to point it out—they simply get all hot and bothered about Obama, and they don’t give a damn if you point out they’re feeling, not thinking, because they see that as a sexist attack on “emotional intelligence” and that other Oprah crap. Pointing out that they’re using feelings to make a choice which should be based on logic is read as an insult to how women are” or something.
