Media Darling Flips And Flops Way To Center
IBD Editorials ^ | June 26, 2008 | Charles Krauthammer

"To be clear: Barack will support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies." —Obama spokesman Bill Burton, Oct. 24, 2007

That was then: Democratic primaries to be won, netroot lefties to be seduced. With all that (and Hillary Clinton) out of the way, Obama now says he'll vote in favor of the new FISA bill that gives the telecom companies blanket immunity for post-9/11 eavesdropping.

Back then, in the yesteryear of primary season, he thoroughly trashed the North American Free Trade Agreement, pledging to force a renegotiation, take "the hammer" to Canada and Mexico, and threaten unilateral abrogation.

Today, the hammer is holstered. Obama calls his previous NAFTA rhetoric "overheated" and essentially endorses what one of his senior economic advisers privately told the Canadians: The anti-trade stuff was nothing more than populist posturing.

Nor is there much left of his primary season pledge to meet "without preconditions" with Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. There will be "preparations," you see, which are being spun by his aides into the functional equivalent of preconditions.

Obama's long march to the center has begun.

And why not? What's the downside? He won't lose the left, or even mainstream Democrats. They won't stay home on Nov. 4. The anti-Bush, anti-Republican sentiment is simply too strong. Election Day is their day of revenge — for the Florida recount, for Swift-boating, for all the injuries, real and imagined, dealt out by Republicans over the last eight years.

Get out your giant flip-flops from the Kerry campaign. Obama must be greeted by crowds of Flip-Flop Flippers everywhere he goes, between now and November.

The man is an empty suit with an empty head. A Great Pretender. A puppet of the Left.

He has no relevance to the life of any true American, black, white, yellow or brown, and he must be exposed at every turn.

Paleo, way to many “if”s in your scenario to be feasible.

If you cant hold your nose, try a clothespin or a gas mask!. Or consider yourself responsible when a muslim-apostate leftist marxist opportunist picks SCOTUS justices who may sit the bench for up to 40 years. Who will be Hussein’s SCOTUS advisors or choices?

william ayers...jeremiah wright....al sharpton....patrick deval.....jesse jackson....james cone.....bernadine dohrn...mayor daley.....edward said....louis farrakhan....or maybe....george soros..after all he’s paying for a good part of this. Benjamin Franklin said it right, “He that lies down with dogs, shall rise with fleas.”

In the 90’s Krauthammer was one of the anti RTKBA DC Types along with Rich Lowery, CK thought we needed to two generations to make the US public change their views and become more like Canada....

“But” he still is pretty thought provoking, I like him “despite” his RTKBA views.

The Obamao already has the massive war chest, and literal hours of puff stories in the works by the LSM, McCain needs some help...

Let me ask you a couple of questions that bother me:

What happens if McCain goes just far enough left to win WITHOUT significant support from the Conservative base? Will the Republicans learn the lesson that they have to be “moderate” to win?

Or for that matter, let’s say Obama wins (which I think is more likely than not at this point). He does a lousy job - inflation out of control, terrorists out of control, the economy in bad shape, etc. With the press on his side, President Bush gets much of the blame. What makes you think that the Republicans will learn the lesson that they have to go RIGHT?

The question is, how much pain are you willing to have the country go through, how many liberal justices on the SC do you want, how much damage to the Constitution do you want, just because the more conservative candidate is not the candidate you wanted?

At this point, I will vote McCain and hope for a better choice in the future.

By the time he's finished, Obama will have made the Clintons look scrupulous.

He has already set some individual records with regard to:

speed of flip-flop

2nd place in Poorest Explanation (Hillary kept the gold for her failure to answer on the Spitzer illegal alien question).

Obama should really chage his motto to:

Change You Can't Believe In (Because I'm subject to change my position at any second)

Thanks for all the responses.

First of all, I’m not new to FR. I posted since 2004 as “CZB” but lost my password and could never get FR to send it to me.

I appreciate that you all will vote for McCain, and that’s fine. Most of the arguments you level against me I heard in 1976 when I worked in a Reagan write-in campaign—that I was effectively selling out etc. etc. etc. My ‘76 write-in is a vote I’m very proud of.

I think if the R’s lose they will go more conservative in 2012 in part because (1) it’s really hard to NOT be more conservative than McCain and be an R, and (2) I know that I plan to work like a dog for a conservative candidate for 4 years starting the day after Obama wins in November, and so will you.

As for the Supreme Court argument, do you all understand that McCain is a big fan of Bader Ginsburg? Why do people automatically think McCain will put anyone other than a lib on the bench? Obama can really only replace libs on the Bench as the four conservatives are the youngest members—they aren’t leaving anytime soon. I would challenge him to actually FIND someone more liberal than the justice(s) he will likely replace.

My supposition that Obama will only last 4 years is based on this notion: if we can’t beat him after the 4 inept years he is certain to have in office, then we can’t beat anyone anyway. As for him being a disaster for America, my strategy COUNTS on him being a disaster. The Left is gonna win the White House eventually and every four years they crank out someone worse than 4 years earlier. I’d rather deal with it now than later, when it’s likely to even be worse.

The American people are apparently hellbent on experiencing Marxism for themsevles. I’m just one person and I cast my vote in Maryland, where Obama will CRUSH McCain anyway. I started out at age 14 campaigning for Barry Goldwater. I haven’t done what I’ve done and spent my life believing what I believe to then vote for John McCain, a man who has nothing but contempt for me and what I believe.

Like I said, I ain’t holding my nose for a second and I am planning to turn all that’s bad about 2008 into something great in 2012. We did it before, and we’ll do it again, but we won’t do it by voting for liberal Republicans. That’s just death. Always has been, always will.

All that said, I don’t begrudge anyone their vote for McCain. If you have to, you have to. I know your heart is in the right place.

If this happens I will never see another conservative president in my lifetime. That’s why I’m resigned to Obama. It’s a better outcome for conservatives than McCain, who will send us into decades of exile if he gets in the White House.

“This is still a center-right country. Obama cannot win with just the moonbats and liberals”

Sorry you are wrong , the constant drum beat of the fascist MSM and Teachers is turning this country to center left.

You don't need to go any further than listen to Hannity’s “Man on the Street” segment. I heard it today and was absolutely appalled at comments of the the youth he was interviewing. A certain song comes to mind after hearing these idiots. Deaf, Dumb and Blind

We are screwed

“I like it when Mort and Fred get to quibbling, lol.”

Fred’s a blowhard and doesn’t know when to shut up. When he makes the most minor of points, he puffs up and folds his arms.

Mort, on the other hand, just babbles...mostly RINO/liberal crap. Brit usually has to correct him since most of his premises are based on stupid and inaccurate observations. Personally, I think he hits the sauce too hard.

You have to wait for these two nitwits before you get to the guy who gets right to the point and has the most intelligent insight...Krauthammer.

“Liberals on the Supreme Court would totally rewrite the Constitution......”

Every fricking dollar spent by Mcshame should be on commercials in regards to the 20 years of devestation Obamma will ravage on us with his Marxist SCOTUS picks, there is no recovering from this. He needs to remind the American idiots of decisions the Obamabot Judges have handcuffed us with.... Like: Immanent Domain, Habeas Corpus and of course all 5-4 vote close calls we have won, but won't in the future as Alzheimer's continues to settle in with Kennedy

Krauthammer, and Brit. I like Brit, he ‘leads’ the conversation. The only time he ‘preaches’ is at Juan, lol.

He really gives it to Juan, sometimes I wonder why Juan continues to come on the show.

That is irrelevant

Your hardened rhetoric is just plain silly. I've presented THE choice--Obama or McCain. To continue to deny we'd be better off with McCain making these choices is, frankly, idiotic. Later.

Very scary scenario for the Supreme Court, but that is what we would get with Barack Hussein Obama.
