WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Members of the Senate sought on Thursday to pass bipartisan legislation to more than triple funds to fight AIDS in Africa and other countries, but some Republican foes vowed to block it because of its cost.
President George W. Bush had called for a doubling of U.S. funding to help fight a global battle against AIDS.
There are indications his administration would go along with more aggressive spending, according to congressional aides. But he has had difficulty convincing some fellow Republicans in Congress to go along.
Supporters of the proposed $50 billion in U.S. funds over five years had hoped the legislation would be approved by the Senate before a July 7-9 meeting in Japan of leaders from major industrialized countries. The U.S. House of Representatives passed its version of the measure on April 2.
If the Senate embraces the $50 billion passed by the House, health groups hope that would pressure Japan and other major Western economies at the meeting to increase their contributions as well.
But with time running out before Congress begins a holiday recess at the end of this week, Sen. Jim DeMint, a South Carolina Republican, threatened to block passage.

Once again I have been enlightened by Dr Levin, Obama has introduced legislation that the senate will vote on sometime after July 4 th. The Global Poverty act will commit 845 billion AMERICAN tax dollars to support Global poverty! This bill will be tied to our foreign policy and be delivered to the criminal sesspool the UN for RE distribution. INCOME REDISTRIBUTION ON AN INTERNATIONAL LEVEL BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE VERY DEMONRATS YOU VOTED INTO OFFICE. I thought I couldn’t get much sicker than I already am. We need to do what we’ve done in the past with the immigration bill.
Insane.
And why the hell are dumping money into other countries to help them fight a disease that they just perpetuate. This is literally a "black hole."
Most of the money is spent on stuff like condoms and sex ed—which makes things worse—and on a huge bureaucracy of gay activists—who make things worse.
I don’t mind donating to the missions for relief of the poor and sick in other countries. But I do mind giving my tax money to a huge boondoggle that MAKES THINGS WORSE.
Listen, President Bush, you are not getting any credit at all for the huge sums you have spent on “fixing” AIDS in Africa. And it’s not doing anyone any good. Time to end the whole damned, counterproductive program.
