California State Sen. Tim McClintock thinks Sen. John McCain should choose his former primary opponent, Fred Thompson for his running mate. McClintock made that statement at the Newsmaker Conference on May 24, hosted by The American Spectator and Americans for Tax Reform.
As a self-proclaiming, real conservative Republican, Sen. McClintock wishes for a return to Reagan conservatism in Congress and in the Oval Office. McClintock also expressed tepid enthusiasm for the GOPs presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain.
I was Fred Thompsons state-wide chairman, said McClintock. McCain was not my first choice. He was not my second. He was not my third, fourth or fifth choice either. We can see the difference between a fire and a fireman and I think you are going to see that reality take hold in coming days among conservatives in California.
McClintock insists his desire to return to traditional conservative principles is shared among his constituents. With strong convictions on issues including immigration, gay marriage, and the Iraq war, McClintock supports the old school values of the Reagan administration.

As for the presidential campaign - in the possibility of a Democratic president and Democratic majority in Congress, McClintock offers Republicans the advice of former statesman Frederick Douglass:
Agitate, agitate, and agitate."
McCain wasn't anyone's first choice, Tom...
Fred pinglist?
Heck! He still isn't on my list of choices.
“California State Sen. Tim McClintock thinks Sen. John McCain should choose his former primary opponent, Fred Thompson for his running mate.”
No thanks, Fred was a major disappointment during the primaries, plus the MSM would trash a McCain/Thompson ticket as too old and tired.
Fred seems to have made it clear he doesn’t want this- and my concern has been it’s going to be too great a contrast with the YOUNG Obama..
But still...it’s worth thinking about. As I’ve said several times...this ticket works for me if McCain drops out at the convention, Fred gets the nod and chooses...Allen West for VP:)
Good GRIEF- I completely misread your post! Duuhhh...LOL- McCain was never a choice of mine- I meant FRED was my first choice.
Long day.
Can I say “McClintock for Vice President” ? ;-D
Lol, it happens. Fred was my first choice too.
as much as I would love to see it, it ain’t gonna happen! Two old guys vs. youth and vitality. The MSM would have a field day with this. But then again, they may represent 2 adults in this race.
Fred would fine as VP for me, and he was my first choice and probably still my only choice among those also rans for president. McCain, ugh. But, the headlines would write themselves and they probably wouldn’t be good.
Forget Allen West, let's start a committee to draft Adam West for VP!
Two Old white guys? Nahhhhhh, we need someone young and vibrant as VP.
Fred’s a great guy, but two old men with cancer won’t sell too well.
Maybe Sarah Palin as VP might sell a lot better.
Lets see. He wasn’t my first choice. He wasn’t my second choice... Well hell, he wasn’t my 120 millionth choice either. 120 million and one, perhaps...
FYI!
At this point, choosing Fred as VP might get McCain more conservative votes.
OTOH, thought Fred said no way does he want to be VPOTUS.
I agree with your points. I think Fred might be persuaded to accept a VP nomination on certain tougher-than-usual conditions. (Examples, although I am guessing, might include “Cheney-level authority,” informal veto authority over such things as ComprehAmnesty, judge-picking authority, etc.)
NO MORE SENATORS!
John McCain gets my vote ONLY if it is Governor Mark Sanford.
Anyone else, and I vote for one of the 3 guys running 3rd party.
