Large amounts of ozone -- around 50% more than predicted by the world's state-of-the-art climate models -- are being destroyed in the lower atmosphere over the tropical Atlantic Ocean. This startling discovery was made by a team of scientists from the UK's National Centre for Atmospheric Science and Universities of York and Leeds. It has particular significance because ozone in the lower atmosphere acts as a greenhouse gas and its destruction also leads to the removal of the third most abundant greenhouse gas; methane.
The findings come after analysing the first year of measurements from the new Cape Verde Atmospheric Observatory, recently set up by British, German and Cape Verdean scientists on the island of São Vicente in the tropical Atlantic. Alerted by these Observatory data, the scientists flew a research aircraft up into the atmosphere to make ozone measurements at different heights and more widely across the tropical Atlantic. The results mirrored those made at the Observatory, indicating major ozone loss in this remote area.
So, what's causing this loss? Instruments developed at the University of Leeds, and stationed at the Observatory, detected the presence of the chemicals bromine and iodine oxide over the ocean for this region. These chemicals, produced by sea spray and emissions from phytoplankton (microscopic plants in the ocean), attack the ozone, breaking it down.

These scientists aren't on the cutting edge of their science. They have to find new ways to make the data i the model. /s/

We can all, um, cough a sigh of relief.
that dreaded ozone again, ozone in the lower atmosphere is actually a greenhouse gas? so this is bad. in the upper atmosphere it keeps out the uv rays so this is good. but if the upper atmosphere ozone hole closes to much it traps greenhouse gases, this is bad. omg! i am getting a headache.
Voila!
But of course. We should have known that long ago; but, then, of course we did.
What’s the thickness of the ozone layer and how difficult is it to measure?
so it wasn’t all those cfc’s we were spraying into the air?
How are the environmentalists going to spin this one?
Guess it also means the cows can er “breath” a sigh of relief.
I can't help it ...
Every time I see one of these statements ... I think of the "press conference" in Wag The Dog, and Dustin's various "warrooms", hatching out a/the plot.
Dustin starts thinking, and word association and fantasy alone finalizes the location ... Albania !
And it is all reported as sudden, who could'a known, knock me over with a feather ... surprize !!
Is the water vapor (largest greenhouse gas) over the Atlantic also being destroyed? /sarc
No, no, no. You’re not current. Scinentist last week announced a change in the way they collected data to make it better fit the model. I’m serious.
Oh God,That phytoplankton won’t hurt the penguins I hope!
I gave up trying to understand their logic a long time ago. The whole "it's getting hotter so the whole planet is going to freeze in a new ice age" revelation left me with a migraine so I just leave it to the guys at South Park to explain it to me.

So these purportedly "state-of-the-art" climate models have a 50% error. And now we're supposed to destroy a multi-trillion dollar economy because these models say we must do so to "save the Earth".
What's wrong with this picture?
How can you ease that which does not exist?
