Maureen Dowd: More Phony Myths (Barf Alert)
The New York Times ^ | June 25, 2008 | Maureen Dowd

Posted on 06/25/2008 11:41:39 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Karl Rove was impressed with Barack Obama when he first met him. But now he sees him as a “coolly arrogant” elitist.

This was Rove’s take on Obama to Republicans at the Capitol Hill Club Monday, according to Christianne Klein of ABC News:

“Even if you never met him, you know this guy. He’s the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by.”

Actually, that sounds more like W.

The cheap populism is really rich coming from Karl Rove. When was the last time he kicked back with a corncob pipe to watch professional wrestling?

Rove is trying to spin his myths, as he used to do with such devastating effect, but it won’t work this time. The absurd spectacle of rich white conservatives trying to paint Obama as a watercress sandwich with the crust cut off seems ugly and fake.

Obama can be aloof and dismissive at times, and he’s certainly self-regarding, carrying the aura of the Ivy faculty club. But isn’t that better than the aura of the country clubs that tried to keep out blacks? It’s ironic, and maybe inevitable, that the first African-American nominee comes across as a prince of privilege. He is, as Leon Wieseltier of The New Republic wrote, not the seed but the flower of the civil rights movement.

Unlike W., Obama doesn’t have a chip on his shoulder and he doesn’t make a lot of snarky remarks. He tries to stay on a positive keel and see things from the other person’s point of view.

IIRC, Karl Rove, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity all came from middle or working class backgrounds. I don't believe Mr. Limbaugh has more than a high school education, yet he's the most successful and highest paid individual in the history of radio.

"Obama is the outsider who never really knew his dad and who grew up in modest circumstances, the kid who had to work hard to charm whites and build a life with blacks and step up to the smarty-pants set." That's funny, I seem to recall reading that Senator Obama attended expensive private schools and Harvard Law, but maybe I was mistaken. Help me out here...

But, 2DV, you do know that Obama being a Democrat makes him a sympathizer of the Working Class, just like FDR.

(sarc.)

It doesn’t matter if he went to the best schools, it is seen as empathy. That is where the Liberal logic comes in, that empathy means more than actual thoughts on the subject. If you empathize with somebody you don’t know, or have never even seen before, that is good enough for the Liberal set. As long as you scream “Hail the Working Class” that sounds good to Liberals.

That is why so many Democrats are wealthy. They pretend what they know about the working class through the usual mythologies about the Labor Unions and through Hollywood and the like. Reality will say that to pay for all of these programs, handing a bucket out or jail to the Middle Class is a good solution.

That is what makes them Democrats. Not reality but myths and legends, and little fantasy novels. It is all fake and hurts people, but it doesn’t matter because they heard somewhere, somebody is starving, sometimes on the news. So the good thing is to vote in a Democrat to make “that go away”.

Once again, a liberal doesn't get it. What a surprise. W wouldn't concern himself with everybody else. He would accept people for their differences and go about the business ofenjoying the event. Being the self-concious person she is, she wouldn't be able to relate.

Well, she’s right about George having a chip on his shoulder; but wrong about why.

He was the one who faced discrimination by the faculty during his years at Yale because he was from a conservative/Republican home. They used to dump on him because they disagreed with his father’s politics.

So, he had a cowboy attitude toward people in power and toward elitist intellectual snobs.

He sure is going to enjoy stepping down and being able to tell all those jerks to take a flying leap. Course now that he’s born again, he’ll probably tell them to do that nicely.

Elitism is a state of mind, It has nothing to do with who your parents were or what kind of schools you attended, your occupation or income. Something that MoDo, and most Liberals and other Leftists do not understand.

Laura Ingraham has a great chapter on elites and elitism in her book, “Shut up and Sing”.

Karl Roves description of Obama as a country Club elite is right on the mark. As is Hillary “Annie Oakley” Clinton.

These people think they are better than you are, and know better how you should run your lives, raise your children, and spend your money.

LOL. An appropriate picture and caption for another liberal that has to contort her reality to make everything fit her distorted worldview.

What in the world? I have never heard President Bush make a “snarky” remark in all the time he was in office—unless it was in jest. Even then, I don't think you could call them “snarky”!

I don't think you could find anywhere in American history a more elitist individual than FDR. His attitude toward the poor was one of magnanimous, arrogant, disdain-—elitism to the nth degree. Maureen, obviously, places herself in the same class. Her smear of Rove is inexcusable and unjustified. Rove is a political pundit. As such, he is entitled to issue such opinions of a political candidate. “The Dowdy One” just needs to get over it.

The more I listen to what Barack Obama says, and watch his actions, the more convinced I become that he is not arrogant; he's stupid. Slap him upside the head stupid.

He might be book-smart to get through college, and he might have a nice speaking voice while he reads a teleprompter, but when he has to think on his feet and react without a script, he does and says things that are .... stupid.

His supporters might try to cover for him and dismiss the impact, but he's still stupid - not arrogant.

If he handles Iran and North Korea with the same wisdom and foresight that he employed regarding Jeremiah Wright and his wife's comments, leta lone his own comments about religion and guns, parts of this country will glow in the dark by the end of his first term. That will be the Barack Obama legacy.

Maureen, your Dowdyness, as usual, you’re way off.

Rove is correct, Maureen. Obama’s “elitism” is not because he’s accomplished so much or was high-born....IT’S AN AFFECTATION!!! It’s bogus, Maureen! An act! Also his permanent 45 degree head tilt....an affectation, bogus, to make him seem “elite” and in command.

BTW, Dowd-o, ever wonder if he gets a stiff neck going around like that all the time?

In America, elitism isn't a matter of how wealthy you are or were raised, it's an attitude. Obama has fully absorbed liberal elitism, where liberals are without question morally superior to everyone else and on this basis are entitled to impose their beliefs on everyone else by the force of law. Anyone, who resists or disagrees is simply a racist, a bigot, a homophobe, a denier, etc., etc., etc. And these beliefs allow the liberal to behave in any manner they desire, to break any law, to abuse anyone, to smear, to lie, to demean all they want, because they believe the right beliefs.

Obama is squarely within this liberal elitist bubble. Arguing his modest upbringing is beside the point, but that describes the NY Times and Maureen Dowd to a NYT.

Rove’s assessment that Obama is a “coolly arrogant” elitist is certainly supported by Obama’s “bitter people clinging to their guns and religion” comment in San Fransisco.
