Liberals do this tactic a lot. You hear it over and over with the gay marriage debate. They will say things like “There’s a war going on, gas is $4 a gallon, global warming is a huge problem, millions live in poverty, and these blankety blank conservatives want to talk about gay marriage. We shouldn’t be discussing gay marriage, we should discuss these other important issues.”
The tactic is used to deflect criticism of gay marriage rulings issued by courts. They say there are so many other issues out there, that gay marriage isn’t important. Yet it was important enough to these liberals to spend millions of dollars to drag it into court in the first place.
What do you say to someone who doesn’t want to discuss an issue on its merits, but rather, says that it’s not as significant as some other really important issue?
