By Tom Doggett

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Following a White House veto threat, the House of Representatives on Tuesday failed to passed legislation giving the Federal Trade Commission the authority to punish oil companies that charged excessive prices for gasoline during supply emergencies.

The vote was 276-to-146 in favor of the bill, falling short of winning the two-thirds "yes" votes necessary to clear the chamber.

punish oil companies that charged excessive prices

Two things: mostly it didn't happen
and they already have law on the books to deal with it.

Of course you are correct thus proving the need for a new law no one will follow.

That’s what I thought too, that there are already laws dealing with this.

And I’ve heard that there have been many Congressional investigations over the years relating to gas prices, as they search for anti-trust law violations, or any other unlawful actions that have caused price spikes. But they have never found a “smoking gun”.

This is walking in Jimmy “the dumb” Carter’s shoes. We’ve already done it once, de we need to repeat it for those who are too young to know?

Drill here, drill now, pay less -— Something so simple even a Democrat can understand.

legislation giving the Federal Trade Commission the authority to punish oil companies that charged excessive prices for gasoline during supply emergencies.

The flaw here is that the current spike in prices *isn't* due to any particular 'supply emergency'. There is plenty of oil to go around, just that its costing more now. That's all.

A dollar says that a “supply emergency” means whatever they want it to mean.

There never was an intent to pass a law. It was only done so Republicans would have to vote against it and the dems could go on TV and claim Republicans are in the pocket of big oil.

Part of being in politics is being in politics and eventually Republicans are going to have to start doing politics if they want to survive. All the Republicans do is play defense.

Turning this country over to Democrats is far more dangerous than anything going on in the Middle East. Bush might win the war in Iraq, but he and the Republicans have just about lost the bigger war here.

When the gubmint’s “obscene tax profit” exceeds the oil companies “obscene profits”, the irony is rich. Would they make it proportional so that whatever rate they “punish” the oil companies, they also reduce the obscene tax rates on fuel? I’m asking too much....

More political grandstanding by people with a lot of better things to do, but who won’t. If I had a plumber this irresponsible I’d fire him.
