A Muslim asylum seeker lost out on an award for volunteer work after indicating that he would not shake hands with the woman who was to present him with the prize.
Alinoor Ahmed Sheikh, a Somali based in an asylum hostel in Tralee, was to have been honoured for his work raising funds for Amnesty International at a ceremony last Thursday organised by the Africa Centre in Dublin. The event was designed to highlight the positive work done by refugees and asylum seekers in Irish communities.
Five minutes before Benedicta Attoh, a member of the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism, was due to present the award she was told not to call out Sheikhs name. The judges had decided that someone else should get the award, said Attoh, chairwoman of the Africa Centres board.
Attoh did not find out the reason why until she read in Metro Eireann on Friday that his name had been removed because of his refusal to shake hands with women. Sheikh told the newspaper that he had been assured his request not to shake a female presenters hand would be accommodated because it was based on his religious beliefs.
His certificate was presented to Therese Elumelu, who was not present, with Sheikhs name crossed out.

The fact that close relatives kiss & hug each other as normal means that we are not worried about incest.
In polite formal Western society, it is incumbent upon a woman to lift her hand making it available for shaking when meeting someone. It has been considered rude for a man to grab a woman’s hand when meeting her without her first offering it for a handshake. This little bit of etiquette is pretty much now ignored in Western business and society, however, it still exists.
Still, touching a hand with a quick public handshake is in no way considered intimate, and is merely polite.
In (very)casual groups—say at a party with friends—it’s not unusual in for a woman to hug a man when greeting—although this is a new practice, coming out of the ‘60s—still, while very casual, no sexual intimacy is understood by it.
What country would you be from where in public a woman meeting someone new with a formal handshake is considered impolite or vulgar?
Actually in Scandinavia, correlating with the large influx of (Muslim) immigrants, rapes have skyrocketed.
Something like 80% of rapes there too involve foreign (i.e. Muslim) men raping native Scandinavian women.
Hat, scarf, or wig?
I’m coming from the Middle East in general, I suppose. Israel/Lebanon.
Among our relatives & friends of the same gender, we greet each other with two kisses & any kind of hugs or affection you want. Men give two kisses to other men as well. I’ve not tried to kiss any non-Middle Easterner’s cheek while in America ‘cause I have it understood that Westerners don’t do this. Almost everyone I hang around with in America is Arab/Armenian/Mizrahi/Turkish/Berber anyway, so we use greeting kisses at will.
Scarf.
If this is true, in the business world, probably due to fear of harassment accusation, practice is returning to the traditional western etiquette...letting the woman choose whether or not to shake hands—in offering her hand, or not, and not treating her like “one of the boys...”
Personally I think it’s a good thing.
Now, if we can just bring back the practice of everyone wearing hats....
Quiz: what is the clear clipboard looking thing on the stage?
Edited due to redundancy.
barry’s lifeline- a teleprompter
Face it guys.
Trying to shake a woman’s delicate hand is and can only be but an inpropitious prehension,
when compared to the true classic real grip comrade handshake that a man gives a man.
Oh, cool. You know, I recognize your site. I’ve been to it before, I think I was looking for jewelry at the time. Now that I know you are the owner, your site will be my first choice for buying things. :)
You got that right as in tight. If they do not like the USA or our customs then get the hello out of the USA and go back to your sand hole and bonking goats for a living.
Oh Gawd yes they hate us but you do not see any running for the border. Exactly like the Hollywood trash. Love the money and the freedom to say whatever when ever. If they went elsewhere they lose that freedom and could even be shot in the head for mouthing off.
Feed these Islomonut jobs to the hogs. Hogs love pure crap.
Oh yeah, like the guys who instantly grab your fingers before the thumbs meet and then proceed to wrench your bunched fingers. I stop those guys and say something like, “uh lets do that over.” I like a firm grip. I hate a hasty grip like its some kind of race. Over competitive bozos.
I've got too much to lose to the lawyer filth and their fem-hag allies. Safer not to have anything to do with them other than the bare minimum required to get the job done.

Gotta give you props for just how you instruct the ocassional hand wrenchers.
Good style; The occasion may come when I just may borrow your method.
Anyone willing to bet me 100 bucks that
Benedicta Attoh, “a member of the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism”
Her present embarrassment notwithstanding, still is probably an anti-USA twit?
I may be dating myself, but I think that that clear clipboard thing you’re talking about is actually the looking glass from the old “Romper Room” show.
(It only makes sense when you see the two pictured infants playing patty-cake with each other’s fists.)
Generally speaking, I met a Christian from an African nation that also wouldn't shake hands with women. I might also add that he also thought that finding a "bride" in the USA was as simple as buying a car.
There are many things that go on in the world that just ain't right.
