After taking the body blows of higher energy prices, Americans seem more willing than ever to fight back with bold initiatives. For example, just over three-quarters (76 percent) support immediately increasing oil drilling in the United States - a position recently espoused by presumptive Republican nominee John McCain. More than seven in 10 Democrats (71 percent) also hold this view.
A slim majority (53 percent) supports drilling in a small area of the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge - up 5 percentage points since March 2006. Support also has risen over that same period for drilling in the Gulf of Mexico - 77 percent today, up from 68 percent.
And nuclear power - another McCain energy plank - seems to be enjoying a resurgence of popularity as well. By a 51 percent to 41 percent margin, Americans favor building more nuclear power plants than the 100 or so that already exist - a 4-point increase in support over the last two-plus years.

Drill

Goodness, majorities of Democrats favor more drilling? The official party line of Dems. is that “we can’t drill our way out of this”. Maybe Dems. are out of step with their people who don’t want to pay 5, 6, 7 bucks a gallon in the future.
I think “Drilling” is Dems Archilles Heel!
GOP better not waste money on Jeremiah Wright.
This is the winning issue.
The GOP has been handed a club to beat the commies with. Iraq is no longer an issue since it’s all positive news. It’s the gas prices stupid and even victims of public education understand drilling = lower gas prices.
I don't think dems are thrilled about illegals taking jobs in a bad job market either...
“Drill
Nuke
Coal”
Exactly.
France is a great model for nuclear — they are getting 80% of their energy from their own nuclear plants. If we followed that model, plus drilled domestically we would be completely energy independent, and OPEC and Chavez couldn’t hold us up, and neither could the global warming mafia, since nuclear energy does not contribute to real or imaginary global warming.
Democrats and Independents better vote the so-called Blue dog Dems out, because they are not really conservative Dems.
They are also going along with the Dem “leader”ship, and are afraid to support drilling. They need to know that they should be more afraid of the voters than the Dem “leader”ship.

Exactly.
This could win us the election, if Republicans use this issue effectively.
It is amazing how many folks don't understand this. Obama is on the wrong side, but I have a lot of friends (overpaid Californians who forgot to check their home prices last week) who think that Americans will never want to endanger our precious environment. People will let their kids starve homeless on the street before they will agree to drilling off of the coast of California.
Common sense is returning to the electorate. Wonder how the Obama campaign is going to respond? They can’t keep denying the will of the voters or they will surely lose.
“Drill

I prefer drilling, more refineries and nukes, rather than coal. Coal is unhealthy for minors, and dangerous.
I’d like to see us train coal minors for drilling, refinery and nuke employment.
Common sense gets a little more common when everybody's getting a hard, swift kick in the wallet.
I would wager that, since offshore drilling was banned in 81, many people today don’t even know there is a ban on offshore drilling, or are even aware there is big gobs of oil out there. Also, since they are too young, they do not remember the oil spills of the late 60’s and 70’s. Its definitely a winning issue for the pubbies, hopefully they won’t blow it.
Drill now, drill hard, drill often, and give old Gaia a cigarette afterwards she deserves it.
Is that like a tar baby?
We live in ten times cleaner environment than man has ever lived. Affordable domestic energy saves lives. Pneumonia, high cost of energy and thus people living in sub standard housing, using extension heaters, using kerosene heaters in doors, many people lighting the gas stove for a bit. In rural areas, wood stoves.
Coal fired generation plants with modern scrubbers delivering electric heat is clean, and could be well cheaper.
“Minors” you posted an albabyism
The only thing ANWR is any sort of a sanctuary for is mosquitoes; the only thing which would really help the place is DDT.
Yeah, it’s true. The little buggers can hand dig a seam of coal that would be too costly for a machine to get at. No younger than 7. Some of the boys from small parents can dig until they’re 14-15.
