Like I said, I’ll be the first to advocate longer prison sentences or, preferably, the death penalty. However, if that doesn’t happen, I’m not a supporter of strong restrictions once they (or any felon) is out.

Sorry, that last sentence wasn’t too clear. Please allow me to rewrite it as:

“Better for the child if the “community” thinks the child has an angry, vindictive parent (which the “community” will think regardless of what story the parent tells), than for the “community” to also think the child is a rape victim. I don’t want anyone thinking of my child as a victim, and if I have to come across as a lunatic to prevent that from happening, then that’s what I have to do. Perhaps this woman thought the same. “

With a sky high recidivism rate and abysmal cure rate, a commune would be good.

I'll even grant (with absolutely no evidence!) that after the have "paid their debt to society" (how do you undamage a child?) a majority don't want to offend again.

Isn't it the height of cruelty to dangle young vulnerable children in front of someone who has these urges?

Would you think it wise to hire a reformed alcoholic to be a bartender?

Would you hire a reformed child molester to run a day care?

I don't understand why not, Bluegrass. When government refuses to execute justice, what else is left for the good people who merely want safe communities?

Justice, or peace & order - which is the greater good? Because right now we're running low on both.

Not to get too technical . . . but how the heck does a 7'3" man get into a doghouse???

Hmmmm.

Q: How do you get a 7'3" man into a doghouse?

A1 You have him sass his wife.

A2 You use a whip.

A3 Have him sass his wife, she'll use the whip...

Nobody is FORCING them to live in child-rich neighborhoods. In fact, if I were the warden (or their counselor), I would push for them to move to Florida and live near a nice retirement community!

However, once out, I think they should have the ability to live where they choose. We don't seem to limit any other criminals. Why stop there? Why not say that spousal abusers can never get married again? Or white collar criminals can no longer apply for managerial positions?

I was thinking along the same lines. You said it far more eloquently than I could have.

Both spousal abusers and white collar criminals have lower recidivism rates than child molesters.

They are many in the prison and psychiatry industries who assert that child molesters CANNOT be rehabilitated.

I see that you are willing to risk my children in the name of your idealism. Please notice that I simply am not willing to risk even your children in the name of your idealism.

A child molester needs to be caught, fairly tried, convicted, and isolated from potential victims, first in conjunction with his punishment in prison, and then in society.

If you won't keep him away from your kids for your own kid's sake the least you can do is keep him away from your kids for his sake!

True.

However, once out, I think they should have the ability to live where they choose.

And mostly they chose next door to the local kindergarden.

Why do you suppose that is?

And I don't dispute that. But, if that is the case, we need to either A) Keep them in prison for the rest of their lives, or B) Use the death penalty.

Please understand, I am not advocating a "soft on crime" position. Just the opposite in fact. I strongly support imprisoning them for life or, preferably, killing them. But, IF we release them, then they should be free to live where they choose.

Ah! Now I understand what you are saying.

I don’t necessarily agree with you, but I do understand and respect your view.

I believe that restrictions on where they can live and who they can associate with are reasonable conditions for release.

Think of it as a lifetime parole.

As long as the risk remains, so do the restrictions. If we figure out a way to actually cure molesters, sure, punish for past acts, cure to prevent future acts, and release. No problem.

You may be right, but it’s a bit of a stretch. Someone who loses control to the degree that this woman did isn’t thinking rationally. I agree, something set her off. It was either a personal experience she had in the past, a few beers(or some other drug) or a combination of both.

I don’t know about that.

I’d rather be a mother that could be with my kids than one, stuck in jail, with her kids with DCFS for the rest of their lives.

You just can’t walk up to someone and beat the stuffing out of them!!!!

Most illogical!

That is EXACTLY what she did, so it should be obvious that you can. Maybe not with impunity, but you can.

There was a great episode of the show 21 Jump Street (about adult detectives working to uncover crimes in high schools disguised as kids) where the father of a girl molested by a teacher comes into the school after him and grabs a baseball bat. He starts beating the lockers around the teacher when one of the detective investigating the case who came to know the girl comes into the room. He stops the father a moment and the teacher looks releaved. Rotates the bat slighly in the father's hands and says something like, "Keep the trademark up or you might break the bat," and tells gestures for the father to carry on. The teacher yells, "How can you do that? You're a cop!" (he had found that out). The detective responds, "Today I'm a batting instructor."

Why is it so hard the think of the restrictions as PART of the sentence, still being served.

Or, at least, to consider it a condition of life-long parole.

IOW, their sentence is NOT 'served' or 'over' just because the incarceration has ended.
