Something scared them to death in the middle of the night and whatever it was they were too afraid to ever go back?
The mind boggles.

This is really a strange case. Avalanche seems at least plausible, but doesn’t explain the injuries. Would be interesting to know more about the injuries (e.g. level of confidence that they were not post-mortem). First rumblings, snow covers the tent so they have to cut out. Hear more rumblings and take off with whatever they have on to get to shelter. Then realize they are going to freeze, so they try to go back to the tent. Injuries due to initial events/ predation?

I think I saw this on the x-Files, and I bet if they had looked closely they would have seen black oil in their eyes.

Never heard this story before, but I wonder if they ran out in a snowstorm for some reason and couldn’t find their way back to the tent.

Cut open from the inside?? Was there a zipper? Did it get frozen shut? Was there an animal at the front door? How big was the tent?
I'm thinking there was a "beast" outside the front entrance. It might have been far away....and the cutting out area was out of the line of sight.
That there was a fire near the bodies...tell me the "thing" was in the area and while going back was intended, it may simply be that they got disoriented when they fled.

Someone had chili for dinner? I’ve seen that evacuate a tent pretty damn fast.

Perhaps, there was a false alarm regarding an imminent avalanche (.e.g rumbling sounds, et). They fled the camp in hurry - some getting injured during the evacuation. By the time they decided to head back, it was too late, and they died in the cold.
