Urgent: House Democrats call for nationalization of refineries
Per Pergram-Capitol Hill
House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live.
Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply.
They also reasserted that the reason the Appropriations Committee markup (where the vote on the amendment to lift the ban) was cancelled so they could focus on preparing the supplemental Iraq spending bill for tomorrow.
At an off-camera briefing, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said the same. And a senior Republican House Appropriations Committee aide adds that "there were multiple reasons for the postponement" including discussion on the supplemental. But the aide said there was the thought that Democrats may wish to avoid a debate today on energy amendments.
Here are the highlights from briefing
Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), member of the House Appropriations Committee and one of the most-ardent opponents of off-shore drilling

We (the government) should own the refineries. Then we can control how much gets out into the market.
Hinchey on why they postponed the Appropriations markup
1119
I think there aren't enough votes for the Peterson amendment. It wasn't taken up (the Interior spending bill) because of the omnibus Appropriations bill. That's the main focus of the Appropriations Committee.
Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL)
1116
They (Republicans) have a one-trick pony approach.
Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV), Chairman of the Resources Committee
1106
You cannot drill your way out of this.
Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), chairman of the House Select Committee on Global Warming
1111
The White House has become a ventriloquist for the oil and gas energy.

Is it time for another Boston Tea Party?????
I continue to suggest as much with my tagline. :)
Why Not? Its just as much of a barren wasteland as ANWR
I saw the video...I am totally thunderstruck.
Props to Cavuto for getting her to go on record with her Socialism.
Look how well it worked for the railroads.
“There is already news about people in L.A. getting into verbal and physical confrontations about cutting in line at gas stations”
There’s your TIPPING POINT: The point where talk becomes action, for good or bad. Action unfortunately doesn’t occur unless stuff like that becomes widespread.
Good post.
Communist takeover alert.
It gets worse than that.
During the oil crash in the mid 1980’s, I was in import/export.
It was amazing how many people were selling scrap metal....
metal that used to be oil refineries on the Gulf Coast.
The only value these refineries had, at the time, was the going rate for scrap metal.
Your tagline is the most intelligent thing I’ve seen on FreeRepublic so far this morning, in fact - it’s our only hope.
Thank you.
This country is officially doomed. The American people have become stupid and they keep electing stupid people to represent them in Washington. A democracy gets the government it deserves. America deserves the government it has.
Maurice the jackass conducts himself like a Nazi and makes Nazi proposals, and then he has the nerve to say that conservatives remind him of the Hitler youth?
That’s rich.
Hey Maury, go do something biologically obscene to yourself.
All these Washington politicians do is live off the productivity of people across this country. They thrive on taking money from one person and giving it to someone else. The Washington crowd is interested in the American public only to the extent that it will give that crowd power.
Yeah, we’re going to wait for a Reagan to undo all the damage the Democrats do. Reagan didn’t undo the damage that they had done previous to his Administration.
And this is the reason why terms limits in Congress are so important.
I saw this on the news last night and I was almost speechless. The words I said would get me banned on FR, but it amounted to “This ain’t f...ing Venezuela a..holes!”
Is there any rational reason for nationalizing oil companies? Have they failed? Are they not producing? Is there some question of national survival that requires extreme measures?
No, the only justification is that it will give Congress control over oil, and who would want to give control of a vital resource to the Democrat loonies in Congress?
So...
This is friggen ridiculous...
These rectal sores are actually calling for the nationalization of an industry. THINK ABOUT THAT... let is sink the f-— in.
Think about where we are at right now. We are where Germany was just before the third reich, We are were Russia was just before the communists took control. We are on the edge of a disaster and we are doing nothing or too little too late.
I watched that video of cavuto and the communist just now... and im in shock. I just cant believe we have come this far or sunk this low. I cant believe WE ALLOWED it to get this bad. I just cant believe we allow ourselves to be put to sleep by the lullabies of the political parties.
When is it enough?! When it actually happens? When the government actually starts nationalizing industries?! If your waiting for the “American people” to get fed up, you might as well put the chains on now brother.
Jesus f’ing christ... we’ve become a nation of pu——s...
My God...I dont even know what to say...
Nothing like going “Postal” with our energy needs.
Start your gardens and building your bikes if this happens.
