Haunted by the ghosts of Vietnam, the one-time maverick has transformed himself into just another liberal-bashing fearmonger.
Evening, June 3rd, in a muggy, dragonfly-beswarmed place called the Pontchartrain Center, just outside New Orleans. Half a continent away, amid yet another legacy-smashing fusillade of unsolicited invective from Bill Clinton, the excruciating Obama-Hillary mess is finally wrapping up, in a pair of anticlimactic primaries somewhere over the darkened plains of Montana and South Dakota. But here in the Big Easy, John McCain has chosen this moment to mount his first general-election attack against the Great Satanic Liberal Enemy who, as luck would have it, turns out to be a Negro intellectual from Harvard who's never served in the military. And this is supposed to be a bad year for Republicans?
You'd never know it from listening to McCain, whose kickoff speech is the same election-year diatribe that Republicans have been giving for decades, one long broadside against those goddamned overgrown Sixties weenie liberals who hate the flag, love the bomb-tossing enemies of America and are bent on the twin goals of ending the system of free enterprise and placing every aspect of our lives under government control. McCain pegs Obama as a man who wants to take America "backward," to the failed ideas of the Sixties. "I'm surprised that a young man has bought into so many failed ideas!" he says, to furious applause. Then, spitting out a forced, ugly laugh that he must have practiced many (but not enough) times in the bathroom mirror of the Straight Talk Express, he adds, "That's not change we can believe in!"

Thanks for the reference but Id rather take the remaining time left this evening to wipe up the mistake my dog made on my brand new carpet.
More to point, what if Matt REALLY IS A WEENIE!
I still remember his profile of Mike Huckabee during the campaign. You could just smell his frustration because he really, really wanted to paint Huckabee as a cold, evil, heartless, racist rightwinger, and was thwarted at every turn by Huckabee being nice to him, telling jokes on himself, playing rock music on his bass or being defended by the very people Taibbi approached to try to get gotcha quotes. Lacking anything else, he finally fell back on painting Huckabee as "insane" and "loony" because of his religious beliefs, a tack that RS would consider unforgivable if you used it when talking about a radical Muslim. Or, Heaven forbid, a candidate who spent 20 years attending a church in Chicago run by a genuine paranoid, racist nut.
The author is a smirking, superficial, massively ignorant young man who is far too fond of his own cleverness, such as it is. His illustrator is beneath contempt. This piece belongs back in the sewer it bubbled out of.
Disrespectful assholes.
"Hatred"?
I can't think of an opinion piece so perfused with unreserved HATE as this one by Taibbi.
The sophmore name-calling, the insolent tone, and the ... HATE.
This is YOU Democratic Party of 2008. THE party of hate speech.
No offense but this is the kind of article where you’d expect them to interview the VC guards who’d say McCain would make a bad president because he wasn’t forthcoming and diplomatic with them when they were torturing him and his buddies.
Rolling Stone is the main outlet for the dumbest, most left-wing generation in American history.
Matt Taibbi “spent his senior year abroad at Leningrad State University”
Right there's where you dismiss the little estrogen crazed weinie polisher. I can post links until my fingers bleed showing leftist sites that are exactly as described.
I’d hate to see former “Playboy” political cartoonist, Ori Hofmekler’s version.
Seriously, the prose is so purple it’s giggleworthy.
I would call this unintentional self-satire.
So did Laura Ingraham back in the eighties.
Unlike her I guess Matt failed to learn from the experience.
Well, dash it all! There’s an idea! Seeing as McCain has such warm relations with the Vietnamese nowadays, I think it just might be possible for his campaign to scare up one of his old guards to attest to his heroism under torture for a TV ad.
It’s not far-fetched. Recall the Potemkin tour the Viets arranged for Ted Koppel to the site of John Kerry’s Hornblower moment during Campaign ‘04.
Ever since McCain buried the POW/MIA issue in 1993 they have had good, mutually profitable relations ever since. Nothing like crinkly, green money to help make bygones be bygones.
"Fearmongering", is that anything like telling people that we're all going to drown and/or fry if we don't immediately lock our cars in the garage, raise our government-monitored thermostats to 80 degrees in summer, and buy some of Al Gore's carbon credits? Would telling people that they're not going to reach their three score years and ten without a government run health care program qualify as "fearmongering"?
Rolling Stone. Who else would put a digitally enhanced photo of Algor on their front cover?
McCain is the new epitome of evil to these people. He will be getting A LOT more of this and then some. These people really have no limit to the indecency and hate they spew. They live on it. They’ll be exposed with Obama and this Congress however. Then they will have their opportunity to die for their ideology and take the country they hate so much down with them.
We (my daughter) actually had a subscription to this [civilized adjectives fail me] excuse for a magazine. I was just checking to see what the other side was saying. I knew I would need to have my sewer boots on but this is beyond my worst expectations. People who read this and are not furious at the disrespect shown in this article are complicit in the unraveling of our great experiment. God help us all.
Here is my cancelation request.
CANCEL MY SUBSCRIPTION #01———— IMMEDIATELY
