Actually....they have books online. I believe your question should be....
Can I post excerpts from an online book I've read? No one is arguing "we should be able to post the entire article". The fact they ask us to pay for four words and have your "license" revoked if you say anything they don't like, is the problem.

If your friend decides to dispose of it by giving it back to you, that is his prerogative.
