I understand your point but I do not know copyright laws, if I went out and bought a book - do I have the right to publish it on the Internet for free?

Actually....they have books online. I believe your question should be....

Can I post excerpts from an online book I've read? No one is arguing "we should be able to post the entire article". The fact they ask us to pay for four words and have your "license" revoked if you say anything they don't like, is the problem.

No, you could only publish an excerpt under fair-use laws, but you could lend it to your friend to read, and then discuss it, because you bought it, and you own it, and can dispose of it in any manner you wish. If your friend decides to dispose of it by giving it back to you, that is his prerogative.
