No great loss... The wildly partisan “news” outlets such as AP and Reuters are helping themselves to ... extinction.

Actually, the site might be more enjoyable without so much liberal AP propaganda. You're right Blennos, no great loss...

They are trying to control free speech. - I thought they were trying to get paid for the product they produce, like any American business, how are they trying to control free speech?

Rush has been talking about how AP abuses their virtual monopoly on print news media in this country. Something like 4,000 newspapers.

Maybe we could share a lawyer...
This is beyond ridiculous, Fair Use allows more than 4-7 words.
I do understand Jim’s position, FR can’t afford to defend another Fair Use lawsuit. It’s someone else’s turn.

I consider this move by AP to be more problematic for them than for the rest of us. No one will give the articles exposure other than some mainstream outlets which less and less people use anyway.

Maybe the AP will get lost in wake of the rest of the worlds press.

how are they trying to control free speech?

Associated Press expects you to pay to license 5-word quotations [barred if damages AP reputation] (Boing Boing June 17, 2008 Cory Doctorow)

It gets better! If you pay to quote the AP, but you offend the AP in so doing, the AP "reserves the right to terminate this Agreement at any time if Publisher or its agents finds Your use of the licensed Content to be offensive and/or damaging to Publisher's reputation."

Something I just thought of - how in the world is someone going to write a research paper, publish it online, and how is one supposed to give citations and such? This is just absurd!

Are you defending some make up right to not allow even a few words quoted from one of their articles?

They are trying to stifle any commentary on their articles.

You can always say something like this in response to one of their propaganda pieces:

“According to the Associated Press in an aricle published on June 17, 2008, partly entitled ‘It’s all America’s fault’ (notice it’s less than five words) America sucks. They’re now reporting that the war is lost and we should surrender to the terrorists immediately. Actually, they claim it’s all Bush’s fault. They’re also saying that the Osama-Obama/Clinton ticket is unbeatable and we should just cancel the election and let them take office early.”

(and post a link to back up your critique)

I’m sure it will be SELECTIVELY enforced.

So basically if they see commentary on one of their articles and they don’t like it.. they’re going
to take you to court.

What is next? Charging for orally quoting an AP article during a discussion about politics?

Milne’s family still owns Winnie The Pooh but Disney Corp. fights them to make it a public domain work.

See Disney fights both sides of the argument, that Mickey Mouse should NEVER lapse and that works they did license SHOULD lapse.

We’ll know their demise is truly tragic, if there’s a stuffed toy in the wreckage.

I guess paraphrasing it is.

Sucks though, since mocking their exact words is so much more effective. They've got the lawyer army though.

Hopefully, they'll grow increasingly marginalized as they intentionally ban themselves from the arena of open debate.
