Scoot Around These Gas Prices
self | 06/16/2008 | vanity

Anybody want to talk about scooters and mini bikes? Face it, with these gas prices the idea makes sense. I have one that gets 80 MPG and tops out at 45 MPH. It cost less than $1500 and, in the State of Georgia, for less than 50cc, there is no registration, no advalorum tax and no special operator's license. Plus the insurance costs about $120 a year and there are special parking places available.

I know these aren't Harley's, alright? But they sure are fun and CHEAP!!

It’s Moto Mojo which is Chinese. So far so good. The only problem is the owner’s manual reads like it was translated into English by a 3 year old.

Try the Honda Gyro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ5nUdpisys and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_70-jBCyNVQ

You pretty much can’t tip it over in normal use.

While nobody will argue that motorcycling is truly safe, there have been great advances in safety gear in the last 5 years alone. There are now airbag jackets and soon full suits that make you look like the Michelin man in the event of an accident. They’ve saved a number of pro riders from nasty crashes lately.

Also, MOST of the idiots that end up dying in a crash weren’t wearing full gear.

Wear all the gear, all the time.

By the way, still safer than getting pinned in the wreckage of a Geo Metro while you bleed out, or in a Prius as the battery pack shorts through the chassis... and you.

See the Honda Silverwing:

600cc engine, 0-60 in 6 seconds, tops out over 110mph.

As opposed to a Corvette, which also has no metal around you...

Also, have you looked at the *1800*cc Honda tourers lately? The Goldwing incorporates rudimentary side impact protection under the fairing now.

Real men stopped riding T-birds when they realized just how awful they were and how unreliable they were.

Real smart men ride Hondas now. (Though the new T-bird is acually pretty good.)

With all the above said in defense of scooters, I don't own one. I consider them a lower form of two-wheeled motorized life.

This is the model I ride:

My wife also works at a hospital, and WE RIDE with other doctors and nurses. Cower in hole and you won’t live one moment longer.

I had a few over the years.. they are great for getting you to where you need to go.. however when I moved to Nevada I sold mine off.. never used it and it was just too hot during the summer to use. Also they stink on non paved roads like we have out here.. and driving over gravel was a nightmare.

Scooters are fun but make sure you get a 125 to 150 cc model so you can at least keep up with city traffic. And get a good model, too—I’d recommend either a Honda or Piaggio/Vespa model.

I might go for something like that; I like the double wheels in back. THANKS!!! Commuting by scooter or bike in our town is pretty safe. It’s a college town and folks are pretty used to seeing them (and bicycles) around and are fairly careful. I’d never do a highway or interstate on one, but they’re great for a few miles to and from work. The old paycheck does go a lot farther if you don’t need so much gas to get around.m,
