READING, Pa. -- Police said a 61-year-old Reading woman beat her 16-year-old granddaughter severely after finding her in bed with another girl.

Joyce Beddell is charged with aggravated and simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police said Beddell's granddaughter suffered serious bruises to her legs and buttocks during Thursday's assault with a cane and a belt. The other girl fled from the house before the beating began.

Beddell told police she had done nothing wrong. She told police she should be allowed to discipline her granddaughter as she wishes.

Beddell was jailed in lieu of $10,000 bail. It was unclear if she had a lawyer.

When I was a kid my father's favorite punishment was a whipping with his belt. We'd get about 5 or 6 good whacks that hurt like h*ll! I got one once that left a welt on the back of my leg. We had a class trip the next day to an amusement park and I wore shorts. The welt was visible. Sister Annette and Sister Dominick Marie asked how I got the welt and I told them. When we got back from the park they sent me home with a note. My father was informed by them that if he'd confine the blows with his belt to my backside the welts wouldn't be visible! Can you believe how much things have changed?? Today my father would be hauled in jail and I'd have been slammed into foster care.

And BTW...I deserved the whipping...I stole a balsa wood glider from the penny candy store and got caught.

The grandmother wasn’t consulting the Judeo-Christian worldview for guidance - she had an emotional, ego-driven reaction and lashed out. Just like Muslims do, though they take it to greater extremes because they know their Sharia law and culture will back them up. Same human fallibility, same after-the-fact justification for it - just a slightly different code of acceptable responses.

Those coaches for small town High School football in Texas in the late 60s and 70s had made a fine art of notching, drilling holes in, and working a wooden paddle to inflict pain without doing real damage.

Back then, when old Dub Johnson wielded one, you did not want to come back for more...or at least you made as darn sure as you could that you did not get caught. LOL!

Amen to that - my West Texas teacher back in the '60s with the wooden paddle with the holes etc was a Mr. Michaels.
