Rush to drill for oil shale unwise
denverpost.com ^ | June 16, 2008 | Denver Post Editorial

----snip----

We believe commercial oil shale production in this region will come, and probably within 10 years. That's why it's so important to address the concerns The Post voiced 28 years ago about the impact of oil shale production on the environment and economy of the West, especially on our scarce water supplies.

"In-situ," or in-the-ground, technology being developed by Shell and EGL Resources, along with a new approach by Chevron crafted by teaming with Los Alamos National Laboratories, may be able to solve those problems. But the companies doing that research say they aren't yet ready for commercial development.

We commend these far-sighted and responsible energy companies for working with Western leaders like Salazar, Gov. Bill Ritter and Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal to ensure that these vast reserves are developed wisely.

Insane, isn’t it? Shale oil, natural gas, nuclear plants, offshore drilling, Mt. West coal etc. , all are available to us with good, solid technological safety bases. That liberal Dems will love the snail darter and kangaroo rat over our own population and be afraid of some so called global warming natural disaster is just cowardly. Drill, drill and write ole John to change his mind because this is an issue which the GOP could actually win with.

"I lived in Northern Maine where the lumber clear cutting in the 70's and the 80 was appalling; a rape of the land in the worst sense of the word."

My understanding was that lumber companies planted trees to replace those they cut down. Lumber is a fully renewable resource which I believe(ed) was being in fact replaced. Are you saying this wasn't being done in Maine?

Typical Liberal DegenoTard..For them, it’s allways about limitations..limitationd for you, and you, and me...success at anything other than limiting the human condition, is an anathema to those who want the same thing for all...except them...all in the same piggie piggie mud, with the same piggie lives, and hatred for those that better themselves and their lots.

“Did you bring enough for *everybody*?.....”

Democrats long for the tyranny of the mob...Thats why they’re all enraptured cult tards for the Pied Piper Obama.

The roots of the anti-electric can opener go back to about 1970. A Japanese economist was shocked the Americans were using electric energy to open tin cans, and predicted an American energy crisis.

And just out of curiosity, what the heck is an "energy saving toaster"? Automatic shut-offs have been around since at least the 1950s.

30 + years ago, Exxon’s approach to getting oil out of shale was to drill and blast, crush the shale down to golf balls and then hit the chunks with radiation to make the oil come out. In this process, the golf balls because bigger than soft balls, (about 40 percent bigger.) Add this impact to the normal 25 percent swell factor and you begin to see the problem.

Yes and Jimmuh Cahtuh's "Synfuels Corporation" spent billions of taxpayer dollars to find this out. Fortunately we have a new cadre of liberal political dipshits to make sure we repeat other old mistakes instead.

Gypsy moths did more damage than the lumber companies. I was there, I worked those lines. Now all the Canadian companies come to Maine, cut the timber, take it to Canaduh to process and then sell it back to us. Yeah, that worked out great.

Until the program ran out of money, the DOE gave a tax credit to coal suppliers who could qualify as suppliers of "synfuel."
Synfuel could be made by spraying residual oil on coal.
