Technically that is a D-handle gardening spade made for turning soil. To effectively put loose sand from a mound like that into a sandbag, he would be better off using a transfer shovel.

The MSM's enormous presence in the background is testament that this is nothing more than a staged photo op.

I wonder how many times his shovel actually lifted dirt off of the ground?

Five? Maybe six times tops? Obama's "work" reminds me of that scene in "Zoolander" when he shows up at the coal mine and creates a distraction instead of a hard day's work.

I bet that most of Obama's time was actually spent giving ambiguous statements about "hope" and "change" with the shovel tip on the ground, and the handle resting in his hand.

The Americans actually working made for a great backdrop to Obama's softball forum with his media fools.
