NEW YORK In an interview for this Sunday's edition of The New York Times Magazine, famed novelist/essayist Gore Vidal appears to question Sen. John McCain's account of being imprisoned by the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam war.
Asked what he thinks of McCain, Vidal calls him a "disaster," then tells Deborah Solomon, "Who started this rumor that he was a war hero? Where does that come from, aside from himself? About his suffering in the prison war camp?"
Solomon replies: "Everyone knows he was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam." To which Vidal responds: "Thats what he tells us."
Why would you doubt him? Solomon wonders. "Hes a graduate of Annapolis," Vidal explains. "I know a lot of the Annapolis breed. Remember, Im West Point, where I was born. My father went there."
Asked how he felt when he heard about the passing earlier this year of his conservative nemesis, William F. Buckley, Vidal says, "I thought hell is bound to be a livelier place, as he joins forever those whom he served in life, applauding their prejudices and fanning their hatred."

Vidal is a hateful old queen, but don’t even bother with his Barry BS. Here is a video of Bud Day discussing John McCain’s time in the Hanoi Hilton.

Loony.
No other word for it.
Cheap shot.
I don't like McCain's politics and many of his policy stands, ipso facto I am siding with a sick loon like Gore Vidal?
I'd have difficulty siding with Vidal if he said the sun was out at high noon.
just because mccain got bashed by da ebil librul, isnt going to get me to vote for him. but what vidal said is uncalled for, yet another death I will relish.
Vidal is a bitter old queen.
This man is sick.
I really can’t understand how ANYONE, regardless of how they feel about Republicans and John McCain, can still take this man seriously after making comments like this.
I’ve heard many despicable things in my life, but this tops most of them.
The fantasies of an old Queen.
Gore Vidal writes in bad taste, how surprising. Say what you will about McCain’s politics...but the man can’t raise his arms because of the time he spent as a prisoner. C’mon Gore show a shred of class.
Inbreeding DOES have consequences.
Leni
Better to do a complete delousing of Jon F’n Cary’s service record...
Use the same language Buckley used in the 68' debate against Vidal...
You will win in a landslide....
Vidal is your typical leftwing punk ~ however, unlike so many of them he’s into genealogy, and that’s been of benefit to many.
I guess this is something that McCain will be able to post on his cry baby smear website...Oh, sorry wrong candidate.
Al Gore and Gore Vidal.
Sooooooooo now McCain’s lib pals are turning on him.
McCain suffered greatly at the hands of the Commie scum and no one should forget it.
But this in no way excuses McCain for his years of backstabbing conservatives.
Some will hold their nose and vote for McCain...some will cuss a blue streak and vote for him...some will be voting against Obama but no conservative is going to cheer for McCain.
The sooner this g**d***ed q***r (in Buckley’s words) croaks, the better.
I’m no fan of McCain, and if his enemies weren’t stark-raving mad, I’d be content to sit this one out.
But they are, and I’m not.
He knows the radically demented left will pick that up and run with it.
When this bugger dies (Vidal), it might be good for the Mods to lock out comments.
Whatever disagreements I have with Senator McCain - and there are many - I admire and greatly honor his service to our country.
I suspect this is partial payback by the Left for the country rejecting John Kerry, who served in Vietnam (4 months)...I need say nothing more. I was going to, but I’m not gonna do it...not gonna go there...wouldn’t be prudent at this juncture...
