A teenage Christian died a fortnight after having an abortion to avoid conflict with her Muslim boyfriend's family, an inquest has heard.
Manon Jones, 18, suffered bleeding and went into shock after part of the embryo remained inside her. Doctors admitted her care on the night she died was compromised because they were so busy dealing with other cases and had they had more time to treat her "things could have been different". Miss Jones's mother, Llywela, told the inquest that after finding out she was pregnant in May 2005 her daughter was keen to keep the baby. But she was "besotted" with her Muslim boyfriend, Naeem Muzzafar, and did not want to upset or bring shame on his family with the news of her pregnancy. She said: "Manon found it very hard to make a decision to terminate the pregnancy, she wanted to keep the child but there were difficult circumstances which she had to consider with her boyfriend's family and their Muslim religion."
Eventually Miss Jones accepted she would have a termination and went into hospital on June 11 to take medication, returning the following day to complete the abortion. However, within 48 hours she began bleeding, feeling light headed and ill. After a scan failed to spot a problem, she continued with her plans to go on holiday with her friends, but returned home early to Bristol, where she was studying, and took a taxi to the city's Southmead Hospital on June 24th, where she suffered seizures and cardiac arrest. She never regained consciousness and doctors turned off her life support machine three days later. Dr Hugh White told the inquest Miss Jones died of hypovolemia, an abnormal decrease in blood volume, and shock caused by "retained products of conception", namely the embryo. Blood tests showed she had an "extremely rare" and critically low level of haemoglobin, a protein which carries oxygen in the blood, and is a sign of hypovolemia.
Dr Richard Porter, a obstetrician at Royal United Hospital, in Bath, who did not treat Miss Jones, said it was "wholly inadequate" to keep her waiting for a blood transfusion for more than four hours, and they should have "got the blood up, and got it up fast". He said the actions of staff at Southmead Hospital, however busy, on June 23 and June 24, were "insufficiently robust". Dr Lucy Jackson, in obstetrics and gynaecology, who treated Miss Jones, said her early symptoms did not point to hypovolemia and she was considered well enough to wait for a blood transfusion. She said she was diverted following an emergency and said: "If we hadn't been so busy, particularly with the other emergency, we would have had more time and things could have been different." Mrs Jones, from Bangor, north Wales, said she last saw her daughter alive as she waved her off on her holidays.
She said Miss Jones was cold and feeling faint, adding: "We both held on to each other and the train doors were closing on our hands as I stood on the platform as the train was leaving." By the time she reached hospital Miss Jones was unconscious and dying. She told the inquest, in Flax Bourton Village Hall, her "bubbly" daughter was a keen member of the local church's youth club and regularly sang with family at chapel. The inquest continues. |

This story really covers a lot of issues. ROP, abortion, socialized medicine
” Blood tests showed she had an “extremely rare” and critically low level of haemoglobin, a protein which carries oxygen in the blood, and is a sign of hypovolemi”
She had an EXTREMELY RARE low level of haemoglobin because she was bleeding to death. Yes when you are bleeding to death haemoglobin would be low... also so would every other product of your blood. Hypovolemia= Hypo= low Volemi= Volumn = low blood volumn. Classic case of doctor speak to cover up a major screw up.
....and I use the word “Christian” loosely.
Socialized medicine coming to a E.R. near you
I wonder how long she had to wait for the abortion.
Well, not very rare, and sure as hell not safe...but definitely legal!
“Legal” is all that matters to people for whom abortion is a sacrament.
Evidently embryos are referred to as “retained products of conception” there. Nice place.

The inquest continues but no one will be held accountable. That’s what happens when the Government is responsible. You can’t successfully sue the Government.
They will be replaced soon.
These guys got two for the price of one. Bet they went home feeling lucky.
Hypovolemia and anemia are not rare when you are hemorrhaging.. It is practically the definition of shock caused by blood loss.
You can make whatever you will of the ROP connection, but it was socialized medicine that killed her.
products of conception is a technical term for anything related to pregnancy. It may have been part of the baby, or part of the placenta that was “retained” after the uterus was evacuated.
After a vaginal delivery sometimes part of the placenta can remain in the uterus, and is a cause of severe bleeding. So the term “products of conception” is not a term necessarily referring to the baby, and it is not related necessarily to abortion either. It is merely an anatomic diagnosis that one sees on a pathology report.
