COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham faced a long shot primary challenge Tuesday from a fellow Republican who has hammered his ties to Arizona Sen. John McCain.

In Virginia, Democrats wrapped up a bitter contest to run for the seat being vacated by retiring Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Davis.

And in Maine, Democrats chose between Rep. Tom Allen and political newcomer Tom Ledue in a U.S. Senate primary while both parties settled hard-fought races in the 1st Congressional District in the southern part of the state.

Graham challenger Buddy Witherspoon, a retired orthodontist and former Republican National Committee member, has criticized the one-term incumbent as too liberal for conservative South Carolina.

Shoot! If I had known Linseed had a GOP challenger, I would have sent him some money (the challenger, not Linseed).

Ahhh...if life could only be that grand! If just for an afternoon. Graham is not the guy you’d expect South Carolina to elect.

Graham is not the guy you would expect Republicans to elect in any state.

Well, yeah, except in 2002 Flimsy Tinkerbelle succeeded in representing himself as the one to fill Strom Thurmond’s enormous footprint. Fooled me, sorry to say.

But heck, if in ‘02 we knew absolutely nothing about either candidate except their names, “Lindsey Graham” would have been creamed by “Buddy Witherspoon” in a heartbeat.

Buddy Witherspoon does have a certain ring to it.

Listen, don’t feel bad. I came very close to voting for that little leprechaun guy with the big ears in 1992. Heck, he made a lot more sense to me than Clinton or Papa Bush.

Drats!! The good people of S.C. must be a little cautious about the name Whiterspoon.

Also, don't forget, people hate going to the dentist!

South Carolina also voted McCain too in the GOP primaries.
Maddening that even a conservative state like this one still votes in the RINO’s. Now we have that goofball Graham for more years in the Senate. Sour state of affairs we contend with.

Every poll I read suggests Graham will win-can someone tell me how? The man has been a wimp and subservient to McCain, not the people who elected him.

Grahamnesty Balletslippers is going to get a message this evening from the ignorant peasantry. He had better pay attention to those of us who floored the accelerator for Buddy Witherspoon.

Or maybe right now, Little Lord Fauntleroy is hissing, “Let them eat cake!”

The presidential primary was open, so it wasn’t exactly representative. Besides after the first couple of primaries McCain was declared the winner by the press and the decent candidates got some of the worst press coverage I’ve seen in my lifetime.
I had high hopes for Witherspoon but he didn’t have the $$ to get enough people familiar with him I guess.
The first few years Lindsay was in office he was a darn good conservative. I don’t know what the heck is in the air down there that sours everyone after a while it seems.

I wish the message was a little stronger than 71%-29%. He’ll see this as vindication.

Could Linseed face defeat tonight? Is that a possibility?

Yeah, except what was the eligible voter turnout?

I took my lunch break to vote and I was number eleven on the sign in roster, and this is downtown Columbia, SC at the local senior center.

There’s a lot of smoldering resentment against Tinkerbelle, and we don’t even know yet who the opposing Democrat will be.

"Republican by day, Democrat by night."

Add me to the list. / Remove me from the list.

Unfortunately, it looks like Pandsey Grahamnesty won the primary 70% to 30%.

He had a ton of money to spend while Witherspoon had very little.

I am disappointed as I know a bunch of you are also.

So, who will win in Nov? Graham (Mr. "Republican by day, Democrat by night") or the RAT challenger. Seems to me it won't make much difference.

Disgusting. What is even worse is that all the politicians know that they can do exactly as they please and the ignorant public will just reelect them.
Now shut up all you bigots!

Republicans just refuse to learn from their (our) mistakes. Now, I don't have a candidate to vote for in the presidential contest or in the Senate race.

I've gotta find a new party!
