The debate is on: The widely circulated photograph of Barack Obama on a bicycle this last weekend either did the presidential candidate no favors, or actually helped his cause.
In an article in today's New York Daily News, writer David Saltonstall shows no mercy, declaring: "It wasn't a pretty picture: ill-fitting jeans, a tucked-in golf shirt, black-and-white socks and a helmet that could make Michael Dukakis blush."
A weekend in Chicago spent by presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama included a bicycle ride with his family Yet in comments to Saltonstall, some Big Apple fashionistas cut Obama major slack. Simon Doonan, creative director of Barneys New York, says: "I like seeing my politicians in goofy weekend attire. It means they're thinking about more important stuff."
Newsweek's Andrew Romano notes today that when the shot of Obama on the bike as part of an excursion with his family in Chicago "hit the wires, the heavily trafficked right-wing message boards of Free Republic went wild."
Those postings, as you can imagine, weren't complimentary toward Obama (but several were creative).
Romano, though, argues that the "bike moment" will be a plus for the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee because it "makes him look like a normal, nerdy American dad."Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts went wind surfing during his 2004 presidential campaign

Looks fine to me.
Notice the trailor hitch on the back. I wonder what he was towing?
“”makes him look like a normal, nerdy American dad.”Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts went wind surfing during his 2004 presidential campaign”
While I think that Kerry always looks like a bumbling, elitist twit; I never understood how windsurfing got tagged as an elitist sport. The equipment doesn’t cost any more than a good bike, or a set of good golf clubs — or regular surf equipment, for that matter. If you live near a body of water, it’s a very cheap sport — certainly a lot less costly than golf.
HA!!
Can someone please "photoshop" the complete picture for the rest of us? Thank you...
Rear tire looks half full.
I see absolutely nothing either embarrassing or impressive about this picture. It’s a guy on a bike. I don’t get what the big deal is.
I don’t get the “ill-fitting” jeans part. Aside from the fact that riding in jeans is not the regular fashion, those are far from “ill-fitting”.
He’s probably dragging Hillary behind him.
And what Democrat is the little boy riding on?
Probably the law.
Even though it is the law where I live for kids under a certain age, I refuse to make my oldest (4) wear a helmet when he is on his bike. I never once wore a helmet riding my bike, and half the time I didn't wear one riding my motorcycle.
Could that be security in the car next to him? If I had sec. all around me, I wouldn’t go biking. Why court the visibility?
He can’t bowl; looks dorky on a bike... can he even dance??
What’s wrong with cinching one’s waist? :-/
Nancy Pelosi out for a nice walk.
Put me in the camp of “people-who-don’t-see-the-problem-with-the-picture”.
The Obama photo I take exception with is the one where he’s standing with Hillary, Richardson and Sheehan early in the primary season and he doesn’t have his hand to heart during the pledge of allegience.
...That one frosts me.
