No breaking away from Barack Obama's bicycle picture
LA Times ^ | 6/10/08 | staff

The debate is on: The widely circulated photograph of Barack Obama on a bicycle this last weekend either did the presidential candidate no favors, or actually helped his cause.

In an article in today's New York Daily News, writer David Saltonstall shows no mercy, declaring: "It wasn't a pretty picture: ill-fitting jeans, a tucked-in golf shirt, black-and-white socks and a helmet that could make Michael Dukakis blush."

A weekend in Chicago spent by presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama included a bicycle ride with his family Yet in comments to Saltonstall, some Big Apple fashionistas cut Obama major slack. Simon Doonan, creative director of Barneys New York, says: "I like seeing my politicians in goofy weekend attire. It means they're thinking about more important stuff."

Newsweek's Andrew Romano notes today that when the shot of Obama on the bike as part of an excursion with his family in Chicago "hit the wires, the heavily trafficked right-wing message boards of Free Republic went wild."

Those postings, as you can imagine, weren't complimentary toward Obama (but several were creative).

Romano, though, argues that the "bike moment" will be a plus for the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee because it "makes him look like a normal, nerdy American dad."Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts went wind surfing during his 2004 presidential campaign

Hate to defend B. Hussein O., but it’s just a bike ride for cryin’ out loud. Media needs to leave him alone. (he should have had Secret Service beside him, but otherwise, so what?)

I don’t see how this picture really hurts, except that it makes him look like he’s riding to his job as a Starbucks barista rather than Democratic candidate for President of the United States.

OK…I’ll admit: That’s pretty much exactly how I look every time I go out bike riding myself. Right down to the dorky helmet.

Oh give me a break! I'm sure they this forgiving to anyone on the right, "because they are thinking about important things."

I love the Kermit comparison! LOL! But I don't really think there is anything to "escape" here like this article portrays. He just looks like a dorky dad taking his kids out for a bike ride. Wait until he really starts campaigning. Then there will be tons of stupid photo ops.

Could be some device to keep the bike in balance. He may not know how to ride a bike.

Why would you need a helmet to go bike riding when he’s out for a little spin around the block with his daughter in tow (was she wearing a helmet). Just another example of the sissyfication of America.

Who rides a bike wearing jeans? hey are way to constraining. I’m not saying he needs spandex but shorts would have been so much better.

This looks solely like a photo op.

Just think of the crap he would get if he didn’t wear the helmet. If I was running for president, I would wear one even if I normally did not.

hate to say this, but I don’t see the big deal in what he’s wearing.

Neither do I.

This is all getting really, really stupid. There's a million things to attack Obama on & a bunch of idiots are getting worked up about Larry Sinclair, a non-existent "whitey" tape, where Obama was born, etc, etc.

If Obama becomes the next president, a big reason will be because conservatives can't distinguish what's truly important & what's just background noise.

Keep your eyes on the ball, people.

That's my standard “work cloths” except plain white socks.

And at 6'3” I look ever dorkyer on my bike.

I'd have hated to have somebody seek a camera shot into my back yard this past weekend when I was cleaning it up.

Neither I nor the the yard were a pretty sight.
