Larry Ross, director of Media and PR for the Graham Association told Mother Jones, “It would be highly unusual and out of character for Mr. Graham to initiate such a meeting, and there has been no contact between the McCain campaign and his office.
“In fact, Mr. Graham has not met or been in contact with any candidates during the current primary process. If he had, it has been his personal policy through the years to avoid partisanship by meeting with representatives from both parties to address spiritual concerns.
“Upon further inquiry I understand that two people unaffiliated with either Billy or Franklin Graham apparently independently, without any knowledge by the [Billy Graham Evangelistic Association], tried to broker a meeting between Mr. McCain and the evangelist. Apparently it was their indirect and unofficial involvement that was declined.”
Why would Rush care much about this? He doesn't seem like a man interested in spiritual things (my observation only).
The entire story has been denied by both MCCain and the Graham people.
The denial has come from the McCain campaign as well as the Graham people. What makes you the judge of whose telling the truth? Being a McCain hater doesn’t give you any special standing.
Rush was putting this into context of what has made this a different coubtry than it was not all that long ago, and the changes have been for the worse.
When he was young, for instance, if a “pastor” of a church said “God Damn America” and other such from the pulpit he wouldn’t have a church anymore, much less would one of his attending parishioners be nominated for President and be leading in most polls, nor would any excuses be given for Wright and Obama as now.
Another example was when John Glenn was sent into orbit Americans nearby to watch it were literally kneeling in prayer on the beach prior to liftoff. He said that doesn’t happen anymore.
And he asked when can you remember a Presidential candidate who declined to meet with Billy Graham. Then said, MCCAIN has declined. So apparently he thought that the lack of meeting was McCain’s fault.
And he thought these and many other things he mentioned were signs that this is a vastly changed America for the worse, for which he blamed the Republican Party MORE, simply because it refuses to stand up now and kowtows to the Left, the more anti American anti Christianity side.
Rush was brought up in the Methodist church in Cape Girardeau MO, and it was a small town, flyover country type according to him and not the modern type. Apparently his parents and grandparents were pretty religious and they also tied their religion to their patriotism, which is how many of the rest of us of Rush’s generation were raised by such parents.
Rush is versed in religion but doesn’t like to talk about it in anything but the most general, pro American sense such as the views of the founding fathers, because he doesn’t want his program to descend into arguments over faith. I have heard him express that several times.
But yesterday, and for days to come, he’s going into thoughtful rants about what has happened to this country and what needs to be done about it, and he included the McCain thing as one of many examples.
And I will ask this: to those who think of this as a scheduling problem and no matter WHO says it is: Surely you realize that Mr. Graham is very vulnerable to illness and death, given his age and health issues.
My elderly mother passed away on May 20 after a relatively short, intense illness that started out as something more mild and not clearly dangerous until it had weakened her to where when a crisis came (pneumonia) she couldn’t overcome it.
Does McCain want to jimmy around with the visit until he’s hurrying to visit Graham in the hospital or at home on his virtual deathbed?? I think Rush sees this delay and scheduling issue as just not a sound reason to wrap his arms around, when you consider it’s Billy Graham and in such frail condition as he is.
And that makes sense to me.
I fail to see why McCain owes jack-squat to Rev. Graham. If the schedule doesn’t work, too bad. McCain is running to be President, not pastor. This pandering to the Religious Right is offensive to both Religion and the Right.
I read what you’ve posted and I have a question: What kind of idiots would try to broker a meeting beween McCain and Billy Graham who had no connection whatsoever to either McCain or Graham and without the knowledge of either?

They’re trying to broker a meeting when they don’t know McCain, don’t know Graham, and neither party even knew they were doing it.

Ok, I’m not saying this issued statement is false, I’m just saying this sounds looney tunes crazy.
People do all kind of crazy things all the time. The only thing shocking is that that seems to be “new” to you.
Thank you for that review of the context of Rush’s statements about Mr. McCain and Mr. Graham. Sincerely appreciated. And by your review, I can appreciate deeply his overall intention.
I’m not a great Rush fan. He takes some liberties with reference to the Divine that irk me. But I am not a Rush basher either, believe me.
Who said he “owed” him?
In the past when politicians met with Billy Graham I never thought it was because they felt they “owed” it to him. I thought both the politician and Graham had their own reasons for it and neither them nor Graham felt forced or coerced into doing it.
So now, if McCain and Graham were to meet, the idea that it was because anybody owed anybody wouldn’t have arisen.
