Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) on Friday sought to end recent speculation surrounding his support for former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore (R), saying his stance has not changed since a statement last November in which he pledged financial support for Virginia GOP candidates but will not actively campaign.
Warner's office issued a statement saluting Gilmore and announcing that he has contributed $2,000 toward his candidacy this month. But he added that he will "defer taking an active role in political campaigns or the district and statewide Republican nominating conventions."
Gilmore last Saturday won the GOP nomination to succeed Warner, who is retiring in 2009, but Warner did not immediately endorse Gilmore, creating speculation that he might not. However, Warner aides on Friday said the senator was simply consumed with legislation during the week and that any impression of indecision was incorrect.
Gilmore will face former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner (D) in the general election for John Warner's seat in November.
"Jim Gilmore has a record of extensive, credible public service, both in the U.S. Army and in elected public office as a Commonwealth's Attorney, Attorney General and Governor," Warner's statement says.
The statement adds that Warner donated $10,000 to the state Republican Party in November, $2,000 to U.S. House candidate Keith Fimian in May, $2,000 to Gilmore and $2,000 each this month to seven Virginia GOP incumbents in the U.S. House.
I’ll vote for Gilmore, though with the recent string of embarrassing Republican campaigns I’m not getting my hopes up.
As an aside, I could’ve sworn I saw Governor Gilmore at the opening of Narnia in Short Pump a few weeks ago.
Although we no longer live in VA, we still have family living there. We hope he wins. Would have preferred Allen.
Warner’s an a$$. He couldn’t bring himself to endorse Oliver North for senate in 1994. Good riddance old coot.
Sen. Warner could best serve Gilmore by going about reminding voters that he is not running and if they want to vote for Warner, they need to mark the ballot for Gilmore. Former Gov Mark Warner is surely expecting confusion over his last name to work in his own favor.
Warner, the old RINO, brings nothing with his endorsement. I’m sure conservatives will be impressed with a RINO who voted for Cap and Trade with Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins last week.
This is the Gilmore who ran for prez right? What I’ve read about him he’s staunch conservative.
He was on the road many times in 2006 for George Allen, and I think it wore him out. Also, I think it hurt him that all that work didn’t win Allen the nomination, like it was a rejection of Warner.
Further, there is a real danger with the ignorance of the electorate, that if John Warner is running around people will mistakenly think he’s “Mark Warner”, and will get confused and vote for Warner in November.
Richmond ping for the retirement of that senile old coot, JWarner.
He did more than simply vote for it - he co-sponsored that atrocious POS legislation!! He can’t be gone soon enough.
No, Corin has so much crap going on he's two heartbeats away from a stroke. Somebody else needs to choose. I'm not sure if I can make it or not regardless of location. So don't choose that on account of me.
Don’t even think about me being there folks — sorry.
I work about 8-10 hours a week and MrGabz hasn’t had a regular paying job since October. I just got off the phone with my VSS caseworker about my June food stamp allotment. Going out for lunch is out of the question in the Gabz household, let alone driving from the Eastern Shore to Richmond.
Sorry guys. It’s been a crappy spring and it ain’t over yet.
And no, I’m not really up for givin’ details.
Happy Birthday, Mud!!!!
Sorry Dave, there ain’t much positive in my life right now........my citizenship status and skin color are causing me a great deal of problems.
I love your optimism. But my current take on the PulseOfThePeople here on the Shore says the opposite.
Y'll think the northeast liberal invasion is bad in NoVA -- it's as bad if not worse here on the Shore. At least the population here is on the minimal side.
