Paul Newman has cancer
Daily Telegraph ^ | 06/09/08

FILM legend Paul Newman is suffering from lung cancer, according to U.S. magazine reports.

The Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid actor, 83, has been suffering from ill health for many months and in May was forced to pull out of directing a production of John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men.

Two U.S. publications quote friends of the actor saying the former chain-smoker has been diagnosed with lung cancer at the New York’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre, a few hours drive from his Connecticut home, where he lives his wife Joanne Woodward.

A friend of the actor told the National Enquirer: 'We have known he is seriously ill for several weeks but his loved ones are being very protective and saying very little.'

Newman has denied previous cancer reports in March after he missed a fundraising event for his Hole in The Wall Gang children's charity.

The same month, he cancelled an appearance on U.S. talk show The Late Show With David Letterman.

His spokesperson played down his hospitalisation, insisting Newman was 'being treated for athlete’s foot and hair loss'.

A cancer patient was quoted in the New York Post newspaper in March that he had seen Newman at the oncologists regularly.

He said: 'He's been there a lot, he's even worked out in the waiting room, doing the squat thrusts.

Last time, he was in there he had a long beard. (His wife) Joanne Woodward is there waiting for him and being very sweet with the assistants.'

Newman retired from acting last year, blaming his failing memory.

While I disagree intensely with his politics, I've always admired him as a person. His charitable works are noble, and his marriage to Joanne Woodward is inspiring. "Why go out for hot dogs, when you have filet mignon at home..." indeed.

His Sockarooni sauce is also pretty darn good.

Prayers to a good man, and his family.

Although I will never watch it again because of Redford I loved Newman in The Sting.

I was the DJ at his Hole in the Wall Gang Camp (hosts kids with cancer) for couple of parties. One party was to celebrate all who had worked at the camp and honor the kids who were there that particular year. Paul worked all night in the kitchen...helping out and serving food. Then he came out to pose for pictures. A true gentleman and a wonderful human being.

Agree completely. I know he is a big lefty, but he isn’t a jerk about it, and works hard at the things he believes in. I respect that completely.

Prayers for this man.

I have nothing against anyone who takes a left look at politics. What I have a problem with is the one that yells and screams their thoughts. Paul at least shut the heck up.

“From the Terrace” was a good movie that they played in together. They were both in their prime.

Oh, and “The Long Hot Summer”. Love that one.

Pretty amazing that Newman was 50 when they filmed Slapshot.

Didn’t care much for his politics but sincerely admire his acting skills, fidelity to his wife of many decades and major charitable works.

At 83, he’s had a hellofa ride. Having lost many loved ones to cancer, hope his passing is as pain-free and love-filled as possible — and that he has found — or finds — the Lord.

Slapshot

I'd bet he'd put that one back in the can if he could.

His best movie, IMHO, was "The Hustler".

He’s a big-time lefty, but he was great in Cool Hand Luke, and Slapshot.

IMHO, Slapshot is one of the most underrated comedies of all time. It was a perfect commentary on the state of the sport at that time.

Prayers for Paul! He's got a big heart with millions to charity through Newman's Own Foundation.

That may be true, but not nearly as obnoxious or arrogant about it.

I kind of feel the same way about him as I do about Tom Hanks. I know Hanks is a big lib, but he DOES appreciate the military and what it does, and he isn’t a dummy about it.
