Non sequitur -- he should stick to acting. Punditry is beyond him:

1. You don't (well, didn't) need a passport to "leave" (and re-enter) the country. I lived one summer in Mexico long before I got my first passport.

2. Because you don't have a passport now doesn't mean you never had one. My MIL doesn't have a passport now despite having lived a quarter-century in various European cities, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Singapore.
