On the Second Amendment, Don’t Believe Obama!
NRA-ILA ^ | 6/08/08 | staff

The presidential primary season is finally over, and it is now time for gun owners to take a careful look at just where apparent nominee Barack Obama stands on issues related to the Second Amendment. During the primaries, Obama tried to hide behind vague statements of support for “sportsmen” or unfounded claims of general support for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

But his real record, based on votes taken, political associations, and long standing positions, shows that Barack Obama is a serious threat to Second Amendment liberties. Don’t listen to his campaign rhetoric! Look instead to what he has said and done during his entire political career.

FACT: Barack Obama voted to allow reckless lawsuits designed to bankrupt the firearms industry.

FACT: Barack Obama wants to re-impose the failed and discredited Clinton Gun Ban.

FACT: Barack Obama voted to ban almost all rifle ammunition commonly used for hunting and sport shooting.

FACT: Barack Obama has endorsed a complete ban on handgun ownership.

FACT: Barack Obama supports local gun bans in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and other cities.

FACT: Barack Obama voted to uphold local gun bans and the criminal prosecution of people who use firearms in self-defense.

FACT: Barack Obama supports requiring law-abiding gun owners to register their firearms.

FACT: Barack Obama refused to sign a friend-of-the-court brief in support of individual Second Amendment rights in the Heller case.

FACT: Barack Obama wants to eliminate your Right to Carry.

FACT: Barack Obama was a member of the Board of Directors of the Joyce Foundation, the leading source of funds for anti-gun organizations and “research.”

FACT: Barack Obama supported a proposal to ban gun stores within 5 miles of a school or park, which would eliminate almost every gun store in America.

FACT: Barack Obama voted not to notify gun owners when the state of Illinois did records searches on them.

FACT: Barack Obama voted against a measure to lower the Firearms Owners Identification card age minimum from 21 to 18, a measure designed to assist young people in the military.

FACT: Barack Obama favors a ban on standard capacity magazines.

FACT: Barack Obama supports mandatory micro-stamping.

FACT: Barack Obama supports mandatory waiting periods.

FACT: Barack Obama supports repeal of the Tiahrt Amendment, which prohibits information on gun traces collected by the BATFE from being used in reckless lawsuits against firearm dealers and manufacturers.

FACT: Barack Obama supports “one-gun-a-month” sales restrictions.

FACT: Barack Obama supports a ban on inexpensive handguns.

FACT: Barack Obama supports a ban on the resale of police issued firearms, even if the money is going to police departments for replacement equipment. FACT: Barack Obama supports mandatory firearm training requirements for all gun owners and a ban on gun ownership for persons under the age of 21.

Aren’t you glad that it will be the Roberts Court than hands down the Heller decision in another few weeks?

Of course I'm glad that Roberts and Alito are now on the court, but Kennedy will no doubt be the deciding vote on the 2nd Amendment case. I don't have a great deal of confidence in him after hearing that he is said to have made a comment that World Court's decisions should be taken into consideration by US courts when making their decisions.

Notice the italics, I only heard that he made that comment, I don't know it to be fact.

In part, it's a euphemism for political agitation. In fact, The New Republic titled its article on Senator Obama The Agitator: Barack Obama's unlikely political education. in recognition of the senator's expertise with Saul Alinsky's methods.

Hopefully our “never vote for McCain” “conservatives” will remember this when hussein and a democrat congress slams through a new set of gun laws that will make europe look like the wild west.

Once they bypass amendment two, the rest will fall like dominoes.

On the bright side, when hussein and his puppet congress doubles your taxes you’ll get free medicaid to cover the stab wounds you’ll get from gang-bangers if you dare leave your house at after 6pm.

Fine, Fine. You guys have convinced me. It will make it an easier pill to swallow if McCain picks a solid VP though.

but if the Democrats ever get a 2/3 majority in Congress and control of 38 state legislatures they could repeal the 2nd and probably would.

Which is exactly why they are pushing amnesty so hard. Or did I miss the "Vote McCain" banners in the amnesty demonstrations?

He fought veraciously to ban guns and to allow, not just partial birth abortion, but, if a baby managed to get born before the dr. had the change to murder it, leave that little one on a shelf to die.

That is the single most important factor in my decision to reluctantly vote for McCain. I doubt that he has a strong moral commitment to the right to life of all conceived human beings that I would like to see, but if I'm not mistaken at least his voting record and public statements have been consistently pro-life

The 2nd Amendment rights issue is one of the most important issues in this upcoming election IMHO, but restoring and protecting the the sacred right to life of all conceived human beings from the libertine barbarians who see an unborn child as a mere inconvenient tissue mass has to take precedence over every other issue on our agenda AFAIC.

What kind of job is a community organizer...? My point exactly.

I understand that he was heavily involved in have lead-based painted walls removed.

Nothing wrong with that but it doesn’t make one automatically eligible to be POTUS.

Wouldn’t you think the press would be all over his resume?

Correct. McCain voted against the Assault Weapons Ban. Read the interview with the NRA. The only disagreement with the NRA is the so-called gunshow loophole.

I want you to remember something. We have disagreements with Bush but he’s the one who is giving us a chance with Heller vs. Washington D.C. because of the conservative Supreme Court Justices that were appointed during his administration.

I’m voting for McCain not because of what he is but what obama is.

I tend to vote the candidate by vibes.. McCain gives a few bad vibes here and there but not bad enough for me that I will be glad to vote for him... Clinton more than McCain.. Obama, he gives me the willies.. Granter McCain is not the perfect conservative, but who is.. To me action speak louder than words...

Spin, spin, and more spin. Enabled by the NRA...

So you don't believe Obama is as anti-gun rights as NRA claims he is? Are you willing to risk losing a very important portion of your constitutional rights because of your intense dislike for McCain?

I don't like McCain's overall performance as a US Senator any more than you do, and I don't fully trust him on 2nd Amendment issues either. But I am willing to admit that he is light years better that Obama on that and almost every other conceivable issue, and I won't cut off my nose to spite my face by not voting against Obama. I may be rationalizing, but I see my potential vote not so much as FOR McCain as it is a vote AGAINST Obama.

As for your apparent dislike for NRA I certainly agree that it is not what it claims to be. I quit the NRA last year after almost 30 years of membership. But when it's right it's right, and I won't let my disgust with some of it's actions blind me to it's many good points.

he only favors registration, waiting periods, training requirements, ban on guns that are too cheap, one gun a month, ban on State CCW permits, no gun shop within five miles of a school, AW ban, and a few other trifles.

That's also my rationale for reluctantly voting for McCain, but you put it in a much more concise statement than I have been able to come up with.

"He's a serious gun-grabber right out of the HCI handbook."

There's only one pro-gun vote I have seen of his ever. That is to vote for the law restricting the federal government from collecting the citizens weapons during times of crisis. (This was as a result of the fiasco in Hurrican Katrina) It's nice to know he doesn't think the jack booted thugs at the federal government can come take our guns away...... yet

"Too many of these guns end up in the hands of criminals even though they were originally purchased by people who did not have a felony. I'll continue to be in favor of handgun law registration requirements"

So Barry, are you in favor of a one car a month purchase? I'd be willing to bet that more cars get stolen in America than guns do. I'd also be willing to bet that more deaths happen in this country as a result of cars than guns. So, what's up Barry? Should we start banning cars? After all, we don't have a constitutional right to it..

I STILL don't understand the anti-gun nuts. In what world do they think that keeping guns away from law abiding citizens will actually make it safer by guaranteeing that the predators will be the only one armed?

The second thought I had... are the anti-gun nuts trying to make it safer for the home because accidents do happen? In that case, you must ban every. single. thing. in the house PLUS require padded walls...

because morons will find a way to maim, injure and kill themselves and other with just about anything...
