Would it not be more productive to deal with the merit of Obama’s political beliefs and values? It seems to me that everyone who is predisposed to doubt Obama’s character are already fully booked on that side of the ledger. Attacks on his ethnicity and religion only strengthen the romantic appeal that he has for his followers while increasing the curiosity of the undecided. This election has to won on merit. Obama understands it is the struggle for the soul of the nation. Defeating Hillary, who won the majority of registered Democrats, was probably more difficult than the prospect of defeating McCain (he was 30 points behind Hillary at the start).
This guy is an extremely gifted, tough American, Democratic style politician. When you make him something other than a new deal Democrat with roots in the organized labor movement you just muddy the debate. When you get into race and religion you trivialize the threat he is to conservative political principles. We do so at our own political peril. He will not be beaten through name calling.
