Probably some creep at the Goodwill
“On Monday, at around 10 a.m. the UNCC students car was seen at a coffee shop near the university. At 1:15, she was found laying dead beside her crashed car on the banks of the Catawba river.
Police Chief David Belk said she appeared to have driven off the road behind the Waters Edge development and the Stowe Family YMCA. They still do not know how she died or why she was so far away from campus.”
By all appearances, it is about a 150 mile drive from Chapel Hill to the Catawba River.
This would suggest that she rode with someone who was picked up at Chapel Hill, and that they drove directly to the river, where they crashed and she was asphyxiated.
Actually she was living in Charlotte at the time of the murder. (Chapel Hill is where she is from.) So it was more like a 30 mile drive.
UNCC is Charlotte, not Chapel Hill.
