McCain drops first ad of general election
The Politico ^ | June 6, 2008 | Mike Allen

Posted on 06/06/2008 10:30:33 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The McCain campaign will release its first ad of the general election today, a spot called "Safe" that features Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) talking to the camera about his war heroism and judgment on national security.

That theme gives a hint of the McCain campaign's planned positive message, in addition to its plans to hit Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) as inexperienced.

A campaign official calls the ad "the first shot in John McCain’s major general election ad campaign."

In the ad, McCain says: "Only a fool or a fraud talks tough or romantically about war. ... I was shot down over Vietnam and spent five years as a POW. ... I hate war. And I know how terrible its costs are. I'm running for president to keep the country I love safe. I'm John McCain, and I approve this message."

The ad is posted here.

The campaign calls it a significant buy, a mix of broadcast and cable in swing states that will be revealed later today.

From the other side, the Democratic National Committee today will release a spooky-music video, "McCain and Lobbyists," finishing with a shot of the senator slapping his forehead with his left hand.

The Republican National Committee today opens a site filled with opposition research, MeetBarackObama.com.

The GOP needs to hit hard, and include something along the lines of "the media hasn't told you" that Obama is corrupt, criminal, etc.

If the Republicans don't start emphasizing the media lovefest for Obama and let Americans know how smart they are to distrust media omission and lies, then they will get little traction against the general public, with their OBAMA is GREAT bombardment for six months on TV and Hollywood from all angles. But then again, Republican operatives seem to be stupider than dirt and completely clueless. If the RNC doesn't start LISTENING to us they are in deep trouble.

“Only a fool or a fraud talks romantically about war....I hate war..” He talks about his grandfather dying the day he got back from WWII, he was 5 years old when his father went to war (WWII), and he was shot down and spent 5 years as a POW. He wants to protect the country he loves.

I like it. Clean, elegant and McCain looks good. I just wish the man had a better speaking style. He’s too sing-songy.

It isn’t a grabber.

He briefly talks about his family military service.

And says he is running for President.

[Overall, a weak presentation.]

The real question is what percentage of voters constitute Obama’s core. That number is going to be hard to come up with. This election is going to be a pollster's nightmare. There are a certain number of white voters who will lie and say they are voting for Obama so they won't appear racist. There are also a number of African American voters who will also lie and say they are voting for Obama so as not to be labeled an Uncle Tom.

I see the caampaign is ignoring my advice to suspend all operations until after Labor Day. Let B.O. have the spoghtlight all over him. Lay low and let him get all his, uh, “stuff” all out there.

John saves his money and at least stops enraging conservatives for a few weeks.

It didn’t seem that Obama in general fared very well in non caucus closed primaries.

This election is going to be a pollster's nightmare.

And the biggest question for judging likely voters - did you vote last time? - is going to be nearly worthless between the new voters who are fired up for Obama and the members of both parties who are sulking after a hard fought primary.

The national GOP has never had the will to get down and dirty, and it’s 1000% LESS likely to happen with McCain at the top. He’s blasted everything that remotely began to spotlight the real Obama.

I always thought it would be for Hillary, but rest assured the MSM is about to launch the biggest propaganda campaign ever orchestrated on our planet. And heck, it will be even bigger than what they had planned for Hillary. A black far-left president is an orgasmic-level dream for them and they’re gonna pull out all the punches in an attempt to make it reality.

Not many. The black voter turnout will be over 100% and the black vote will be 98% for Boobama.

Saying he “drops” the ad sounds like he decided not to use it. That’s weird wording.

Actually thought it was a good ad aimed at dispelling the myth that he’s a war monger. Interestingly one side of his face was kept obscured by heavy shadow at all times. Made me wonder about skin cancer or scarring.

I thought the ‘RATS first ad would show Bari and Michelle doing their “cute fist bump” over and over. It appears that the white Kollege Kiddie Krusaders have become very fond of the gesture and it is possible that the “fist bump” may eventually replace the wildly popular “peace sign” as the favorite hand gesture for college kids.

The O’bamanation will outspend McCain 5 to 1 on ads. Plus, they don’t even have to pay for all the positive puff-piece press that has already and will be just be given to him. McCain will learn firsthand, the error of McCain-Feingold. The irony is palpable.

No, the message is that he is a WAR MONGER. It is aimed at the middle. It tells that tale very well.
