The charge levelled against Maclean's by the Canadian Islamic Congress is that, in publishing an excerpt from my book, this magazine exposed Muslims to "hatred and contempt." Alas, at the first day of the Great Maclean's Show Trial at the British Columbia "Human Rights" Tribunal, the well of my book excerpt's "hatred and contempt" pretty well ran dry in the first hour. So Faisal Joseph, counsel for the plaintiff Mohamed Elmasry, was forced to bus in a huge pile of miscellaneous generic "hatred and contempt" from all kinds of other sources. And even then much of it seemed less like "hatred and contempt" than "mild offhandedness and the occasional droll titter." A lot of it was from me, of course. Mr. Joseph started with my article, but quickly moved on to my book, my columns, my sitcom review, my lame jokes, and no doubt (by the time you read this) my casual asides while muttering to myself on top of Mount Logan during a windstorm. At the end of the first day, m'learned friend was complaining that I had been rude to the three Osgoode Hall law students who've been fronting for the strangely shy and retiring Dr. Elmasry these last six months. Not rude to them in the article in this space that triggered the complaint. No, apparently I was rude to them at TVOntario last month. Not rude to them on-air (although it was a somewhat raucous show), but rude to them off-camera. Geez, these days I don't seem to be able to step out of the house without committing a hate crime.

Get this.
The lawyer said he googled Steyns column and found those posts.
Ergo, proof Muslims were being defamed and insulted.
Steyn writes an article, published in Canada the US and Britain, is discussed on a California based website, has charges brought by a defendant from Toronto, in a British Colombia court.
Seem out of whack to you too?
BRB, I need to go catch up on my Kafka.
All this reality is making me woozy.
Cheers,

They have no judges or juries. They have "hearing officers" and the proceedings are ruled by "administrative law."
Hearsay evidence is admissable if minimally relevant. Relevance is discretionary as an issue, decided by the hearing officer.
There is no appeal process.
These tribunels were put in place by liberal socialists during the Trudeau government era, who wanted to prevent "hate speech" from English Canadians during the initial years of the "bilingualization " of Canada, French/English.
Now these Canadian Muslims are using the Human Rights Tribunal system to attain cultural superiority, and to prevent any truth speaking about their culture and Sharia law.
F'em.
Obama will attempt the same here in the USA with Spanish/English, and Muslims. Its part of the planned "Hope and Change" package.
hint hint....
:)
It’s great!!!!!
They have Steyn in a windowless basement cell.
He says the only connection he has to the outside world there is a wall clock stuck on 8.
He then observed that the state thinks they can control speech but they cant send some union yukapuk ‘round to start the clock.
That’s hilarious! Thanks.
But, unfortunately, all too true.
Why aren’t there hundreds of thousands of Canadians surrounding the court and shouting, “Enough!”?
Grimly hilarious is perhaps a better way of putting it.
You have the final word.
It is flat amazing to me that an Anglo-Saxon country with a heritage of British Common Law could create and harbor such a totalitarian little fiefdom as the Human Rights Commissions.
The HRC are, perhaps, the most powerful expression of why Canada isn't like the U.S.

But it’s exactly where the Politically Correct Left of this country would like to take us. Look at our universities, home of much of our so-called intelligentsia. There are any number of cases where university speech codes have been used in a similar manner.
“Bridget Bardot...Mark Steyn..and we just sit and let it happen.”
It’s france and canada, that’s why. The two supposedly democratic,”Western” countries who had nothing but ill will for us after 9/11. Did you miss all of the hatred of the USA that came out of those two countries?
Mark Steyn was on the air with Hugh Hewitt a few hours ago, and Hugh will be replaying the conversation in about 10 minutes from now. You can listen on the internet if you do not get Hewitt’s show on your local radio. The transcript will also be posted later on Hewitt’s website.

I know. They have perverted the college campuses and the media. But not the legal system. Not yet.
Not that they aren't trying...

&&&&&&&
The Law Courts of British Columbia have have a lot of underground chambers/hearing rooms. This hearing is in one of them. Steyn is not “in a cell.”
