No Graduation Walk for Confederate Flag-Wavers

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) ― Flying the Confederate flag has long been controversial in Southern states but now it's causing a heated debate at Kennedy High School in Bloomington, Minn. Three seniors who displayed the flag will not be allowed to attend their graduation ceremony Wednesday evening.

"It was sitting like that in the parking lot," said Justin Thompson, as he held a Confederate flag that was hanging from a pole inside a pick-up truck bed.

On Tuesday, three seniors, each with a rebel flag on the back of their pick-ups, parked at Kennedy High School.

"I'm just a country type of person, country music, big trucks and everything, that's basically all it means to me," said Thompson.

"And then I found out later that day that it had been taken off when I got called down to the office," said Dan Fredin, who displayed the flag.

They were suspended and the suspension means they're barred from all school activities including their own graduation ceremony...

Liberal definition of free speech;

“Say or do anything you want in accordance with liberal positions with bravado and gusto while bravely having no fear of any consequential reactions or argument”

Convervative Definition of free speech;

“Say or do anything you want as long as it does not infringe on the rights or present personnal danger to others. Suffer the consequences and reactions to your excersie of free speech.”

Freedom of speech must never be suppressed, except for criticism directed at minorities, non-Christian religions, homosexuals, communists, illegal aliens, and other constituencies of the Democrat party.

Yep, a mincing fag. I also noticed they have pretty hot newsbabes in that vicinity.

Thanks -- I was almost totally wrong. I was thinking of Georgia's flag up to 2001 (but that's not a quadrant-ed flag anayway), but you are doubly correct (1) that GA's current flag has no "confederate flag residue" and (2) that MS's flag has a miniature battle-flag in one quadrant.

The one kid with the shaved head was so full of it. Yeah, lots of “country living” in Bloomington, the pinnacle of suburbia and home the Mall of America...give me a break.

High schools are tricky like that; freedom of speech has to be balanced with not allowing kids to be disruptive.

Can't allow potentially disruptive behavior in school for the same reasons it isn't allowed in prison. You do the math.

yeah, didn’t something like 30% of black voters vote to keep the Confederate flag as part of the Miss state flag?

That I tend to doubt.

The vote on the flag was 65%/35% and the ethnic breakdown of Mississippi is 62% white/37% black.

I'm going to guess that the vote on the flag split pretty evenly down racial lines.

The most pro-old flag county was Tishomingo which voted 91% to keep it. Tishomingo is 95% white and 3% black.

The most anti-old flag county was Jefferson which voted 83% to get rid of it. Jefferson is 87% black, 13% white.

The most evenly balanced county was Yazoo which was split exactly down the middle: 4370 votes vs. 4370 votes - 50% for, 50% against. Yazoo is 54% white and 45% black.

This would indicate that very few blacks voted for the old flag, and that very few whites voted against.

Hey, I’m no fan of the public school system. They’re being forced to be there, so it is prison in a way. On the other hand, parents have the right to send their kids to private school or homeschool, and opt out of the rules of the public school system. It’s a big gray area, and I don’t claim to have the answer.

So much for freedom of expression. The descent into liberal totalitarianism continues.

Ah, no. The '56-'01 flag incorporated the Battle Flag (arguably nonpolitical during the War). It was "too devisive". So, for the current one we incorporated the entire CSA First National Flag (the national symbol of the CSA and all its "feelings") without so much as a wimper from the PC crowd.

You gotta love the irony, I don't care who you are...

The Florida and Alabama flags are also variations on Confederate flags.

But the Georgia 1956 flag clearly incorporated the battle flag.

The 2003 flag is much more subtle.

Probably more than 90% of the population could not describe what any of the Confederate national flags looked like.

A good point. People have the right to fly the flag if they want, but trying to pretend that it's not found offensive by a lot of people is denying reality. I find it offensive as it's the flag of a country that for its entire existence was an enemy of the United States of America. I find it treasonous, and am perplexed why so many supposed conservatives glorify it.

I laughed out loud when I first saw the newest flag. If the opponents of the 1956 flag really were knowledgeable in history, at least one of them would have noticed.

Few people get as screamed at on these threads as I do for my utter contempt for the Confederacy as an organization.

However, it remains to be said that few people on earth ever fought so nobly and so often well-intentionedly for such a contemptible cause.

A man like Robert E. Lee was a tragic hero in the original sense of Greek tragedy - like Oedipus or Theseus. An individual of incredible character and talent who was undone by a single fatal flaw.

I have been known to display a Hardee flag on occassion. Since no one knows what it it, there is no controversy.

You’re right that when I (like most Yankees) say “Confederate flag,” I mean a rectangular VERSION of the (square, in actual war use) Confederate battle flag. I had never even SEEN the “civilian” flag of the Confederacy until just the last few years.

Irony indeed!

Not just waving the Mexican flag, but taking down the US flag and hoisting the Mexican flag to wave over school campuses.

Happened a number of times in recent years. Those who then took down the Mexican flags were then punished.

Such is “tolerance”. Surrender of the country is more like it.

I don’t glorify it. But desecration of our flag is permitted under free speech. Some flags are more equal and some speech is more protected.

And it is an “expired” flag. It flys over no foreign power.

While a private employer could take such a stand on private property, can a public school make this demand?

The school indeed has the power to ban it, but to prevent the kids from walking at graduation is a vindictive and petty move by the principal.

I’ve always believed that a substantial portion of people who go into school administration do so to get back at the mean kids they went to school with.
