McLaughlin: McCain Leads Obama Among Women, 49 Percent to 38 Percent
A part of Robert Novak's column that is likely to be widely overlooked:
This resentment is reflected in a private nationwide poll conducted this month by McLaughlin and Associates, which usually works for Republicans but is not connected with the McCain campaign. Poll-taker John McLaughlin found that John McCain had a 49 percent to 38 percent edge over Obama among all women. That is an extraordinary result, running counter to a longtime Democratic advantage.
The conventional wisdom is that women, along with other Clinton backers, will remain in the Democratic camp once Clinton actually concedes. But seasoned operatives for both Obama and Clinton privately advise that the length and closeness of their race make reconciliation much more difficult because Clinton did not drop out once she no longer had any clear path to the nomination.
Indeed, some of those women will "come home" to the Democratic party. (Although maybe not after reading the first few paragraphs of this.) But if McCain wins the women's vote - heck, if he ties the women's vote in November, there's no way Obama's taking the oath of office on January 20 next year.
This is hard to believe. I’d be interested to see that vote broken down by ethnicity and other demographics.
I doubt if this will hold past the conventions. Democrats regardless of gender will tend to vote for the rat candidate.
I’m guessing its the Hillary gals; older women who wear sensible shoes and lots of flannel are all flocking to John McCain.
You’re right. They will *tend* to vote Democrat. That’s not the source of McCain victory. The McCain victory is that if even 5% do not, he peels those votes off and that’s a 10% swing.
And note that women are not concentrated anywhere. They will be in swing states. The far right extremists who are sneering at McCain tend to be concentrated in the deep red states, which McCain is going to win regardless.
Women tend to swing elections. I believe Bush won women both times, as did Bubba.
That “honey” comment didn’t help.
All the more reason for McCain to ask Sarah Palin to be his running mate.
I really think that would be Mac's "checkmate" move.

Oh it will hold alright.
There has never been a case recently where female voters preferred the Republican candidate as late as June.
In both 2000 and 2004, the Democrat candidate was far ahead of the Republican candidate amongst women from before June right on to the elections in November.
“Democrats regardless of gender will tend to vote for the rat candidate”
Black females will vote overwhelmingly for Obama. Most older white women simply won't vote for him.
Obama is toast.
Not really, but Bush was pretty close in 2004 election, 49 to Kerry’s 51. It’s remarkably though since democrats generally had double-digit lead among women voters in past election...
Guess they’re not turned on by a racist, authoritarian Alfred E. Newman clone.
Any thoughts on who leads among Africans and Muslims?
well, maybe bitter Hillary?
So anyone who doesn’t like McCain is a “far right extremist?”
My thoughts too. Since Obama really can't pick Hillary (unless he wants 8 years of Bill raiding the Oval Office cigar closet) Superwoman would pick up a lot of disaffected Hillary Democrats.
Sarah Barracuda seems by far to be the most conservative potential entry on any ticket, including "Libertarian" Bob Barr. I'd vote for her, even if McCain is on the ticket somewhere.
I was thinking McCain would lead these groups, but I could be wrong??
“The far right extremists who are sneering at McCain”
Spoken like a true-blue lib. You are an old timer around here so I know that is not the case. I also suspect that you know that just because one has vomit rising in the back of their throat at the thought of the “choice” we have this year, doesn’t make them an extremist of any sort. Juanito is going to give this nation a royal buggering....it doesn’t lessen the trauma just because he has an “R” after his name.
“That honey comment didnt help.”
Don’t you mean sweetie?
