KENNER, La. Senator John McCain marked the unofficial beginning of the general election with a speech here Tuesday in which he sought to distance himself from President Bush and to argue that he has stronger credentials as an independent agent of change than his all-but-certain Democratic rival, Senator Barack Obama.
For all his fine words and all his promise, he has never taken the hard but right course of risking his own interests for yours, of standing against the partisan rancor on his side to stand up for our country, Mr. McCain said of Mr. Obama in a prime-time televised speech. He is an impressive man, who makes a great first impression. But he hasnt been willing to make the tough calls, to challenge his party, to risk criticism from his supporters to bring real change to Washington. I have.
For Mr. McCain, Republican of Arizona, the end of the hard-fought Democratic primary season offers opportunities and dangers. His campaign will no longer be overshadowed by a Democratic primary that has often seemed to suck up all the news media oxygen. But his aides are also girding for Mr. Obama to receive a bump in the polls once his divisive nomination fight ends, and for a tough general election in which Mr. McCain is vying to succeed an unpopular Republican president and to continue an unpopular war.

The media often overlooked how compassionately she spoke to the concerns and dreams of millions of Americans, and she deserves a lot more appreciation than she sometimes received, Mr. McCain said.
yikes
McCain’s speech was pretty bad. Oh well.
I heard some of it. He sounded like a cadaver.
Is this really FR?
Y’all sound like the vicious vultures Matthews, Olbermann, and crew tonight. They were laughing and ridiculing McCain, who served this country well and suffered imprisonment and torture for it, like a bunch of hyenas at a pig roast.
A little respect, please!
Yeah, it was harder to watch than many of Bush's speeches.
At least it had the virtue of consistency. A bad speech, delivered badly.
Yeah, needed extra nodoze to get through McAMNESTY’s speech. He isn’t even making it up to Bob ‘it’s his turn’ Dole level. He sure is full of inspiration, drive and good ideas though.
I didn't punish myself ... didn't listen to any of them!
Who needs MSNBC when we have goons like you right here on FR?
Yup. I have no idea how McCain plans to win the presidency with the right against him. Today Michelle Malkin said his speech “bombed”, and the Drudge page looks like Barackobama.com
To my recollection, most folks on FR have not held Juan McCain in high esteem over the years. Which FR have you been reading?
Get used to it. McCain is the guy who will be giving speeches from the WH for the next eight years.
4 years maybe
Respect for what, a politician?
*snort*
Only if he finds some charisma in his soul, or takes amphetimines before his next public appearance.
Bad speech delivered badly ...
Get real folks, let McCain make a blatant pitch for Hilary voters while they are still mad at Obama. And in terms of how he delivered the speech, what a man says is mre important than how he says it. And all that matters is a president’s policies. Most of McCain’s will be good, the alternative is Obaminable.
With a milquetoast opponent like McCain, the Oval Office is Obama’s to lose.
Michele has never said anything nice about McCain.
