MND-B Soldiers detain Special Groups criminal leader
Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO

BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers detained a suspected Special Groups criminal leader in the Kamaliyah neighborhood of Baghdad’s New Baghdad security district June 16.

The detained criminal leader is suspected of personally emplacing and detonating improvised explosive devices targeting both Iraqi Security and Coalition forces.

“Each militant swept off the streets of Baghdad represents a step in the journey to peace and stability in Iraq,” said Maj. Joey Sullinger, spokesperson for MND-B. “Removing [this criminal] from circulation will enable Iraqis to live a little safer.”

IA Soldiers discover several weapons caches in Sadr City

Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Army Soldiers seized several weapons in the Sadr City district of Baghdad June 16 during continuing security operations.

Iraqi Army Soldiers with the 3rd Brigade, 1st Iraqi Army Division, discovered a weapons cache at about 4 a.m. The munitions included a rocketpropelled grenade launcher, two RPG rounds and a locally made rocket launcher.

A short time later, the same unit discovered 30 37 mm rounds, a box containing PKC machine gun and AK-47 ammunition, a couple of 155 mm rounds, a couple of 130 mm rounds, 122 mm rounds and a few armored vests.

Third Brigade, 1st Iraqi Army Division Soldiers also confiscated a 30 liter steel container full of PKC and 5.56 mm ammunition at approximately 6 a.m.

An hour later, Soldiers uncovered another cache, containing RPG-7 antipersonnel rounds, RPG-7 anti-armor rounds, RPG propellants, an RPG launcher, an SPG rocket, a set charger, a remote detonator, four electrical detonators, a flash bang grenade, a hand grenade, around 330 feet of detonation wire, several full AK-47 magazines and multiple 82 mm mortar pressure devices.

Approximately 9 a.m., Soldiers found RPG-7 rounds, rocket tubes, 60 mm rounds, about 100 feet of wire, nearly a dozen full AK-47 magazines, initiation devices, radios, radio chargers, more than a dozen hand grenades and an improvised explosive device.

“Since May 20, the Iraqi Army has diligently seized weapons and munitions caches daily,” said Col. Allen Batschelet, chief of staff for Multi- National Division – Baghdad and the 4th Infantry Division. “The numbers of deadly weapons seized will lead to a secure and safe city.”
