NEWARK, New Jersey: A Muslim cleric on Monday graphically described the torture to which he claims he was subjected in Israeli custody, as he fought to block U.S. efforts to deport him on grounds he lied on his residency application.
The issue of torture is at the heart of the deportation proceedings against Mohammad Qatanani, a Palestinian who has been the spiritual leader at the Islamic Center of Passaic County in New Jersey since 1996.
U.S. officials, in rejecting his bid for permanent U.S. residency, said Qatanani failed to disclose on his green card application a 1993 arrest and conviction in Israel for being a member of the militant group Hamas.
Qatanani denies the charges, saying he was detained, not arrested, by the Israelis along with many Palestinians at the time. Qatanani claims he was not aware of the conviction and claims he was subjected to physical and mental abuse while in detention. Over the past few weeks, a number of character witnesses have testified on his behalf, including a rabbi.
In court on Monday, Qatanani recounted his time in Israeli detention describing being tied to a small chair with his hands bound, kept in a freezing cell, and subjected to violence and threats several of his supporters in the packed courtroom began quietly weeping.

OMG, they tortured him with air conditioning!
Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
Out!
Those beasts-how could they live with themselves making him sit in a small chair-reminds me of my doctor’s office who is also Jewish-does anyone else see a pattern here?
Wish they'd done that to me when I was over there ten years ago this month!
I don't think I could take the temperature over there now at my advanced age.
I hope his balls turned blue!
Get him out of the country, he doesn't belong here!
Oh, boo hoo! What about what his maniac brothers of Hammas have done to my people in Israel?
No tears for him!
Plenty of tears for my Israeli people!
Kick his POS a$$ out of my country!
ping
Send him to Israel!
Until the Jews start beheading their captives — they should STFU!
Put panties on his head. That’ll be so bad, he’ll wish he was back in the Israeli air-conditioned cell.
This is why we must NEVER let those at Guatanamon to EVER set foot on US soil. They’ll claim refugee status and go right on to Welfare.
This is not Isreal and we are not Isreali.
Who tortured him or not outside of the US, is not relevant to anything. He either lied in his application or he did not. If he did, then so long don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out....
LOL! Torture would be to tie him down, pour honey all over him, release a colony of fire ants, and have Helen Thomas do a striptease for him while she chants, “there are 71 more of me down in hell just waiting for you, big boy!”
The only thing that won’t make these mohammedans claim “torture” when a butterfly sneezes is when the whole world bows at their feet and chants “allahu fubar.”
“.... torture in an Israeli prison.” The terrorist would say that, wouldn’t he.
What total BS. He was tortured via air conditioning? That is nothing in the Muslim world where torture only starts at raping your daughters in front of you, electroshock to genitals, breaking bones and teeth. That is only the start with Saddam Hussein and other Islamic barbarians
He cracked before the Israelis were able to show him the nude pictures of Shulamit Aloni and Ariana Melamed. (No FReepers, I'm not posting pix, feel free to Google but beware: these are the Israeli equivalents of Helen Thomas and Andrea Dworkin.)
In 1996 Qatanani migrated with his family to America on a religious work visa.
Send him to back Jordan, not "Palestine", since that is obviously where he was living when he came to the U.S.!
Of course, this influx of peace-lovers would be impossible for Israel to handle, so I though maybe Sheriff Joe Arpaio might built them a compound somewhere in Iran.
Just a thought from a guy who worries that Muslims might be improperly tortured.
