Duncan Hunter prepares to pass the torch -- to Duncan D. Hunter

ALPINE -- Here in the Republican stronghold of eastern San Diego County, Duncan Hunter the son is attempting to succeed Duncan Hunter the father in the 52nd Congressional District.

The elder Hunter is leaving Congress after 14 terms and a failed try this year for the GOP nomination for president.

When he first ran for Congress in 1980, he was a 31-year-old combat veteran from Vietnam. His son is a 31-year-old combat veteran from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Father and son share the same brand of conservatism: Continue building the border fence; continue fighting in Iraq; cut spending and taxes; oppose abortion and gay marriage; and support the rights of gun owners and sportsmen. (The Hunters are hunters.)

"If you're asking if I've fallen far from the Hunter tree, the answer is no," the younger Duncan Hunter said at a fundraiser hosted by his parents last week at their hilltop home here, 40 miles east of downtown San Diego.

Hunter's three opponents generally share his political views and have credentials that, in a Hunter-free election, might make them front-runners in this ruby-red district.

Brian Jones, 39, is a Santee councilman and unordained Christian minister. Rick Powell, 61, is a former Marine and retired Army colonel who served in Vietnam and Iraq and worked for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Bob Watkins, 65, is a county school board member and owner of an international management consulting business.

An independent poll done for the Sycuan band of Indians, which donated $2,300 to Watkins, suggests that Hunter will win easily.

Not in this case. But it would be much better if he was running in a different district and D1 kept his seat in the 52nd. We could use a few hundred Hunter clones, frankly.

People should be elected for what they have done, or what they can realistically be perceived to do. We should have big time term limits, and we should be enormously hesistant to elect someone because of their name. The Dems used the same argument (more Clintons is a good thing) to elect Hillary! to the Senate.

Apparently you feel that voting FOR someone as opposed to voting to keep a catastrophically-poor POTUS from coming to fruition is somehow the pinnacle of desirability for us Conservative voters. You apparently desire voting FOR someone who, although far more qualified and far more desirable, doesn't have a snowball's chance in HELL of getting the nod. You and your ilk will simply contribute to the ascension of a despicable excuse for a leader who has only the destruction of the nation in mind for us. I am not sure how you could sit by, in essence, and allow someone like Obama to ascend to the throne...very disconcerting.

Even if we had term limits, it would not apply to one’s offspring. If the San Diego voters want to prevent this “dynasty”, they can easily do so.

But since they are assured that D2 - a marine infantryman and rock ribbed conservative - will carry on his dad’s work, chances are they will vote him in. Why risk getting a mealy mouthed rino when having D2 is the next best thing to another D1 term?

I’m so exicited about hearing ‘vote McCain or else!’ for the next few months, aren’t you?

The GOP has chosen to implode and promote the most liberal candidates it can. I’d rather the country be screwed by the dems this time. As long as we vote for the GOP faulty candidates they will NEVER give us any thing better. Sad, that many are willing to settle for that.

Pissant is in the same situation as I am. A state that votes overwhelmingly liberal with no chance of seeing McCain winning the state. In other states that are not so liberal, I can imagine that many of the old-school democrats (union workers with gun racks) who would have voted for Hillary will not be able to stomach a Communist (Obama), and will vote for McCain instead. If I were in one of those states I would have to think long and hard about my vote.

Seeing as a vote for McCain is a throwaway in my state, by writing in Hunter I can still voice my disgust with the Republican Party's nominee and the direction they have gone. Not sure it will make any difference to the RNC or not. Perhaps my “please take me off your mailing lists until I can support a Conservative” don't have much weight either. But I'll support my local politicians rather than McCain this year.

Yes. You can found an institute that promotes Soroastrianism, be the leader in promoting Algore’s global warming wetdream, use class warfare talking point to condemn the Bush tax cuts, propose McCain-Lieberman to close the “gunshow loophole”, advocate banning “cheap handguns”, stab Don Rumsfeld in the back, be the driving force to desecrate the 1A, state he will put democrats in cabinet positions, vow to close Gitmo, be the poster child for illegal alien amnesty, and side with the enviro-commies on domestic oil extraction yet still expect conservative votes.

The gall of his supporters knows no limits.

Nice. Hope for the country to suffer catastrophic damage in the hopes that it just "won't be too bad..." It baffles me how so many of my brethren truly believe that allowing Obama to rape our country with his policies is preferable to a man who will at least support our military heroes. Look yourselves in the mirror and ask: "Do I want to support the ascendence of a racist, terrorist-supporting, anti-American, anti-military, pro-abortion, pro-amnesty, imbecilic pacifist? Do I REALLY believe the damage caused by a Barack presidency would be insignificant and completely reversible 4-8 years down the road?"

If BO is elected come Nov., I hope and PRAY that those of you who are willing to risk an BO presidency are right...

God help us all if you folks are wrong...

Far better than the alternative, which is a liberal socialist Republican party with McCain at the front.

I find it amazing what people will swallow in the name of supporting our troops. The proper way to support them is by electing a true Conservative, rather than electing socialist Republicans who will do exactly the same things as the socialist Democrats.

What's the difference? McCain's damages to this country and the conservative cause are just as real, and maybe more so.

The only thing left for me in this race is to say NO! No more rotten candidates like Obama or McCain. You get more of what you subsidize. I won’t do it. Save your breath and your 2 degrees of worthlessness between Obama and McCain. Go sell out to the lowest common denominator, that’s what got us here!

This nonsense of ‘going for the evil’ just because it’s your guy’s evil was described perfectly long ago by a former congressman. Sometimes you do something because it’s right, not because it’s popular or politically expedient.

Some historians contend Congressman David Crockett’s political career ended because of his support for the Cherokee against President Jackson’s removal plans. Crockett explains his position in 1834:
“.......His famous, or rather I should say infamous, Indian bill was brought forward, and I opposed it from the purest motives in the world. Several of my colleagues got around me, and told me how well they loved me, and that I was ruining myself. They said this was a favourite measure of the president, and I ought to go for it. I told them I believed it was a wicked, unjust measure, and that I should go against it, let the cost to myself be what it might; that I was willing to go with General Jackson in everything that I believed was honest and right; but further than this I wouldn’t go for him, or any other man in the whole creation.
