TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. -- At a press conference Thursday, Congressman Maurice Hinchey outlined short, medium and long-term solutions to reducing gas prices. He said major reasons for the rising cost of fuel are the U.S. occupation of Iraq and especially the decreasing value of the dollar.

"The value of the dollar has not been addressed. All of the focus has been on the oil companies, the government and the producers of oil. But the value of the dollar has driven up the price of oil at least 50 percent over the course of the last couple of years more than anything else," said Hinchey.

Hinchey to tackle high gas prices Capping gas prices at $2.49 a gallon is one way Congressman Maurice Hinchey hopes to send a message to oil companies.

Hinchey said he knows it will be a long time before any legislation capping the gas price would be passed, but said he will fight hard for the gas cap.

Why stop at $2.49? Why not $.02? That would teach those evil oil companies.

wtf, he admits the dollar is responsible for a large part of the increase and he proposes a price cap?

We’ll have guaranteed shortages! Where’s his plan to strengthen the dollar?

Well, I have to give him credit. At least his plan WOULD lower gas prices, unlike the plans of his Democratic buddies.

It would also mostly solve the “pesky problem” of carbon emmissions, since we wouldn’t have any gas to drive our cars any more.

When there is a cap on gasoline prices, can long lines at the gas pump be far behind? How about rationing, say maybe 20 galllons a month, or for really hard-pressed commuters, 50 gallons a month? Could you live with that?

Gas rationing is so much easier today than it was during the Second World War. And it wasn’t even to save gas then, but to reduce the critical need for rubber, to replace tires as they wore out. Japan had cut off almost all our sources of rubber by 1942, and it was just taking too long to grow new plantations in Brazil.

Clever chemists came up with a substitute that could be made from petroleum, n-butyl neoprene, that turned out to be even MORE useful than the isoprene rubber previously used, as it would not allow air to seep out so easily. A tire with a tube made of neoprene could hold air for months, years even, whereas an isoprene rubber tube would leak down in a matter of a few weeks, making frequent recharges of air a necessity. Air used to be FREE at a gasoline station, remember?

Memo to Congressman Hinchy: Want some real action on gasoline prices?

Ram through legislation suspending all government payroll, expense accounts, and earmarks to Senators and Representatives until gasoline prices fall below $2.00/gal and remain there for 6 continuous months.

Then, lead, follow, or get out of the way and don’t get trampled in the mad rush to get in front of a microphone.

A satirical look (but not so far from the truth):

Congressman Wants to Repeal Law of Supply & Demand

Representative Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.) says he is drafting legislation that will “roll back gasoline prices.” Under his proposal, the price would be capped at $2.49 per gallon. Recently, gasoline has been selling for around $4 per gallon.

“If we leave it to the market there’s no telling how high prices will go,” Hinchey complained. “My bill will make fuel affordable for the average driver.”

The congressman was unfazed by the fact that the cost of the crude oil needed to produce a gallon of gasoline is around $2.75. State and federal taxes add another 50 cents or so, for a total of around $3.25 before transportation, refining and marketing costs.

“There’s no way we could get fuel to the customer for the price Mr. Hinchey wants to legislate,” said ExxonMobile Senior Vice President J. Stephen Simon. “In effect, his bill will outlaw the supply of gasoline. It’ll be worse than the gas lines we saw during the Carter Administration.”

Hinchey dismissed Simon’s objections. “President Carter had the right idea,” Hinchey asserted. “He just wasn’t tough enough on these corporate vultures. My bill will impose severe penalties for non-compliance.”

Under Hinchey’s bill, vendors would be subject to one year in prison for each gallon sold above the $2.49 mandated price. “These corporate profiteers will come around once a million-year prison sentence is staring them in the face,” said Hinchey.

The guy is a deceitful economic idiot. I the government reduces taxes, balances its budget and cuts the size of government and then pays down the debt, the US Dollar will strengthen significantly and the price of oil and gas will come down. PERIOD!!

Of course, as usual, elite socialistic Democrats cannot conceive, ponder, nor implement such reality.

We will wish for $4-5 gas as we waste time (and MORE money) in the hours-long gas lines caused by shortages from gas price caps.

I would love to know his reasoning regarding how our presence in Iraq is driving up the cost of oil.

Does anyone have info on that?

There wouldn't be any gas lines because there wouldn't be any gas to sell. None. America would come to a screeching halt.

How do total morons like this get elected, anyhow? Oh, wait a minute. They just reflect their constituents!
