Chances dim for climate-change legislation {hallelujah}

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- An influential coalition of Fortune 500 companies and environmental groups that was formed to support climate-change legislation has splintered over the Lieberman-Warner bill that is headed next week to the Senate floor.

The U.S. Climate Action Partnership formed last year won't take a position on the bill, although nine of its members - including General Electric (GE, Fortune 500), Alcoa (AA, Fortune 500) and four utility companies - signed a letter to senators backing the legislation.

The letter, also signed by big environmental groups and obtained by Fortune, says: "Prompt action on climate change is essential to protect America's economy, security, quality of life and natural environment."

But other members of the coalition known as U.S. Cap, most visibly Duke Energy (DUK, Fortune 500), a coal-burning utility, are strongly opposed. "It's going to translate into significant electricity price increases," says Jim Rogers, Duke's CEO.

Without widespread corporate support, passage of the bill - already a long shot at best - becomes even more unlikely this year. President Bush remains opposed. House Democrats have been slow to act...

The best argument against The Great Gore Hoax is that one may be branded a fool if one buys the bogus bill of goods.
Nobody wants and politicians can’t afford to be,percieved as fools.
There is no “scientific consensus” over the earth orbiting the sun.If a fact is a fact,it is accepted by ALL scientists with credible credentials in the science.

Thank goodness! I wrote my senators and congressman at the beginning of the week to share with them the reasons why I am against this bill.

That was my thought too. But considering the source of the article, my hopes are not way up there.

...a backdrop of rising gasoline prices and the sluggish economy makes it difficult to win votes for a regulatory scheme that will raise the prices of electricity and gasoline.

It will be interesting to see what another decade brings us. Will the Sex in the City generation enjoy paying these higher prices... for the good of everyone? Will they also continue to show compassion by subsidizing everyone who can't afford the higher prices that trickle down from this? I doubt it. I predict a future rebirth of economic freedom as the reality of greenhouse gas fear mongering makes us all poorer.

Don't trust this clymer Rogers, though. He was on CNBC Thursday morning lapping up the globaloney warming is settled science bilge that the head of the Environmental Defense Fund was spewing.

True, the “O” in OPEC stands for extortion and since we are keeping the Jihadists from carving through the necks of most of their corporate executives, their ingratitude is both evil and appaling.

On Friday I received a letter from RNC requesting money and, if I don't contribute, it means I want liberal rats to run country.

What a bunch of BS and threats!

I plan to print some juan and jorge peso dollars and return with some very direct comments re: the RNC devolving into socialist-lite.

Sheesh, is there any hope these daze?

Could someone explain what GE is up to? It seems to be out in left field in every major issue that emerges in Congress.

GE builds wind turbines, water desalination plants, power grids, power plants, fluorescent light bulbs and on and on ~ products that play into the AGW myth ~ smart and profitable.

My hope is, Rush and the other talkers light the fuse on this bill and we get their phones to melt down like the last time.
