Dunkin' Donuts pulled a television spot featuring talk show host and Food Network personality Rachael Ray this weekend after a Fox news commentator associated it with terrorists.

In the ad, Ray is wearing a scarf that Michelle Malkin said in her nationally syndicated column resembled a kiffiyeh, Middle Eastern garb that is "popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos."

It isn’t just any ordinary scarf. I was in London when we went into Iraq, and all the protesters were wearing exactly that scarf. I imagine they’re popular in NYC, SF, and other liberal, pro-Paletinian venues.

Admittedly, the average Joe wouldn’t have picked up on the Arafat/terrorist connection, but many who live in those liberal ghettos would have.

Whatever Ray may have been thinking, it was a very poor selection.

But when rappers wear scarves that look like my grandma’s babushka, are they endorsing Polish Catholicism?

Of course! But they must do it secretly, you see, or all the other rappers will pick on them.

I mean, I have no beef with her scarf. I just never liked her. She kind of yells and talks fast too. Like she is on “fast forward”. hehehehe

I think there’s an implied sarcasm tag in that... isn’t there?

Not to mention that every time she uses extra virgin olive oil, she says “EVOO”, then tells us what it means (extra virgin olive oil). Just say EVOO or say extra virgin olive oil, not both. Love her nonetheless … ;-)

Probably Rachel Ray had no idea, just as I had no idea.

I remember Arafat wore a funny looking scarf on his head, but the pattern didn’t strike a bell, especially when worn as in the picture.

If what you say is true, and no reason to doubt it, then she was right to pull the ad. I doubt whether she would have done anything so controversial deliberately.

I abandoned reading Malkin’s blog a while back, too much hysteria.... like this and like the time she slammed Gwen Stefani for agreeing to dress modestly for a concert in Malaysia.

Her fingers are too meaty for a girl. As a guy, I can’t say thick, meaty fingers turns me on. :(

I just think the scarf is bad fashion to begin with... I don’t think it works with the neckline of that T-shirt.

I do not think MM was overreacting about RR's DD ad. From what I've read of various interviews with her, our girl-next-door Rachael Ray seems like an uber-cheerful little leftie. I wager she knew exactly what the symbolism was of that particular scarf.

She's a sweet, naive bubblehead who probably genuinely believes if we are just "nice" to other countries they will be nice back. I do not know which candidate she supports (she may be an airhead, but she's smarter than Oprah), but she'd make a perfect Obamatroid.

Kudos to DD on pulling this RR spot. Are those cherry blossoms in the background? What's that domed building? When it comes to marketing, nothing is an accident, though subtleties may slip by the notice of the client.

I understand Dunkin' is anti-illegal. True?

That building in the background looks like the top of a Mormon temple. There’s one not too far away from my house.

Strikingly similar...without the cherry blossoms and and cup-holding eye candy.
