HIDALGO - U.S. Border Patrol agents Sunday detained 18 people from the horn of Africa - an uncommon but not unheard of origin for illegal migrants to the United States, officials said.
The east African immigrants - 13 from Eritrea and five from Ethiopia - were walking along a road in Hidalgo on Sunday when they were spotted, said local Border Patrol spokesman Daniel Doty.
Agents peacefully took the illegal immigrants into custody, Doty said. None of them was carrying drugs or firearms.
Doty said illegal immigrants who come from countries other than Mexico either face an expedited deportation hearing or can request political asylum in the United States. Illegal immigrants are typically deported from the country within 14 days, he said.
It is less common for a group of illegal immigrants to come to the United States from nations other than Mexico and Central America.
While the two nations from which the immigrants are reported to hail share a border, their political climates are distinct.
Ethiopia is the oldest independent country in Africa and takes up about twice the land area of Texas.
Eritrea is a developing nation with a landmass slightly larger than Pennsylvania that sits on the northeast coast of Africa. It gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 and has only one political party recognized by its government. But it is home to several other Islamic political factions, according to the CIA World Factbook.

We can’t close the border because it would only affect peaceful non-violent mexicans. Remember that folks. We must sacrifice our safety to appease marxists.
I’m sure they all had the shots.......whats the big deal?../s off
the shots=their shots
how did they travel??
what route did they take from the Horn of Africa to Mexico??
How did they evade capture in Mexico??
Are they radical Muslims??
Did they train in Pakistan??
How can these reporters get all kinds of info on good guys and nothing on the possible terrorists?? A high school newspaper does a better job.
“How did they evade capture in Mexico??”
$$$$$$ (mordida). Mexico’s 2nd biggest industry. Playing the USA for patsy is the first.
These guys are either Christians fleeing the usual Islamic Bravo Sierra,
or Islamics come to pursue their Islamic Dreams in The Great Satan.
If they are Islamics, they’ll probably get a fast-track to US citizenship
because “they were persecuted” back in Africa.
If they are Christians and lucky, they might get to stay in the USA
if they can convince the US gov. that they’ve been treated badly.
They’ll probably have to put up with a big load of B.S. that Islamics
wouldn’t need to endure.
Like the “Lost Boys” that have been let in the country; even before
9-11 clarified who the monsters in Africa actually were.
All the terrorists came over the Canadian border!/s

There are no non-Mexicans crossing the border. /s
Family values don’t stop at the Red Sea.
Elian Gonzalez, anyone?
Cubans are a special case, if they can set foot on dry land(like Texas), they can ask for amnesty.
Er uh, Eritreans just doing the work that Americans don’t want to do? Building thatched huts?
??? Why the special distinction of 'countries other than Mexico"? Appears that like Social Security, illegal immegration is now also the 'third rail' of politics. Is it because of the Hispanic (legal and/or illegal) voting block that our local/state/federal representatives veered away from action on this illegal activty?
