PESHAWAR - As many as eight alleged militants were killed and three others injured when their own explosive went off inside a vehicle at Salarzai area of Bajaur Agency on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday. The vehicle with alleged militants on board was on way to Jandol area of adjacent district, situated close to Pak-Afghan border.

As per details, the alleged militants were on their way to Jandol of Dir region from Salarzai region of Bajaur Agency. The explosive inside the vehicle went off during the journey, resulting in the loss of six lives on the spot and injuries to several others. Later, two succumbed to their injuries before getting first aide.

The local tribesmen informed that the explosive went off when a rock fell on the Datsun pick-up. The explosions continued for about two hours and were heard in the adjacent areas. The vehicle also caught fire.

The identity of the killed and injured is yet to be confirmed. The officials in Khar, headquarters of Bajaur Agency, have confirmed the killing of five whereas Taliban stalwarts informed that so far eight persons had been killed. All the  killed and injured were on a mission in the area.

The tribal sources informed that the alleged Taliban militants were equipped with modern and sophisticated weapons including rockets, missiles and hand grenades.

Meanwhile, the United States-led forces fired rockets, which landed in Pakistan's territory at Bajaur Agency in early hours of Wednesday. However, no loss of life was reported. So far the authorities concerned are tight-lipped over the firing of rockets by the US-led allied forces camping across the border in Afghanistan.

Monitoring Desk adds: The government has signed a peace deal with a small militant group in a region near the Afghan border, the latest in a series of accords sought by the new administration as it tries to end extremist violence, reports a private TV channel.

The deal includes a pledge from the militants led by Umar Khalid not to target security and government officials, said Syed Ahmad, a deputy administrator in the Mohmand tribal region. Both sides also swapped prisoners, he said. He declined to give details about the number of prisoners exchanged, but said the militants had been holding some government officials.

"We started efforts for the peace agreement months ago, but we managed to sign it on Monday," said Ahmad, who also noted the militants promised not to display weapons in the region. A local tribal elder, Fazal Manan Kodakhel, said the deal enjoyed the backing of Baitullah Mehsud, the head of Taliban movement in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, announcing a truce, Taliban who are waging armed activities in Dara Adamkhel have decided not to attack against the security forces deployed in the area for an indefinite time period, the BBC reported on Wednesday.

Taliban spokesman told the BBC that they had decided after a guarantee given by tribal advisor Ameer Muhammad who was included in the dialogue process between the government and Commander Baitullah Mehsud.

The spokesman claimed that the truce had occurred 10 days before as well but was ended after three hours following an activity against their men.  He said that they would contact the government through a tribal Jirga. "Army troops' pullout from the area, release of their 40 companions and compensation for the affectees in the operation would be our demands in the dialogue process", he added.

Taliban vehicle explosion kills 4

Staff Report

GHALANAI: A bomb exploded in a 4x4 vehicle owned by local Taliban in the Mamad Ghat area of the Mohmand Agency on Saturday, killing at least three Taliban and a bystander, and seriously injuring three more Taliban.

The four-wheel drive Surf was parked in a workshop amid a row of shops facing the Lakrai grid station. The local Taliban sealed off the area soon after the blast occurred.

Witnesses said that three Taliban, whose names were Hakeem Khan, Qasim and Sultan Zeb, and a bystander, Zeerak, were killed in the blast. The injured were taken to the Nawagai hospital in the Bajaur Agency. The political administration confirmed the blast had taken place, but said the toll was three dead and four injured.

They were probably smoking before the explosion. They were definitely smoking after the explosion.
