‘Survivalist’ produced explosives at home

Investigators say a ‘‘survivalist” with a stockpile of food and more than 30 weapons and 230 pounds of chemicals was ‘‘rolling along” in producing explosives in his Gaithersburg townhouse when he was arrested last week.

When authorities searched the man’s home, they also found his 12-year-old son sleeping with a loaded handgun under his pillow and another within reach, county police said.

An anonymous tip about illegal fireworks led federal and county investigators to James L. Boka, 47, officials said. He was arrested May 21 and charged with 11 counts of possession of a destructive device, two counts of reckless endangerment and one count of weapon endangerment to a minor, according to a statement from county fire officials. He was released from custody the same day on $60,000 bond.

‘‘The amount of chemicals that he had in his house were a public safety hazard,...‘‘...We were just glad we were able to stop this guy because he was already rolling along.

A James Boka registered with an online Ron Paul county group described himself as a U.S. Navy veteran who has worked inside Washington for 25 years in nearly every major agency, including World Bank, Pentagon.

I have been aware of the plan to destroy the USA for many years now and I have grown tired of preaching the danger to so many people who do not want to hear it,the profile continues. ...There is nothing more important to any American right now than to fight off the attempts of the New World Order and its puppet masters from destroying the last few pieces of the United States Constitution before it is too late. I want to help in any way I can so my son does not grow up in a fascist police state.

Paranoia will destroy ya. I wouldn't recommend sleeping with a firearm under one's pillow unless one can manage something several orders of magnitude more heroic than The Princess And The Pea. Moreover, appearing at the office with "TLOC" imprinted in my forehead is a sure conversation-starter, but it isn't the sort of conversation likely to result in a morale bonus. The problem would be addressed, IMHO, if somebody sold a high-powered semiautomatic whose factory name is a palindrome.

However, there are several likely safety issues related to turning a Gaithersburg townhouse into an explosives factory. Not all of OSHA's little recommendations are manifestations of an overweening regulatory mechanism; some actually address certain issues such as chemical fires and uncontrolled explosions, which are sure to catch the attention of the local homeowners' association. Why the heck this clown can't get a bunker like the rest of us is what I want to know. ;-)

..hmmmm, who is posing 'incessantly' about Paul? I'm surprised based on these results you are complaining I'm ignoring paul in relation to the other candidates.

"The investigator again confronted Boka, who consented to a search of his home."

Here's where the guy screwed up. The only thing I see wrong that he did here was having the kid sleep with a loaded gun under his pillow. That's pretty stupid. Put it in a nightstand, it's just as accessible and a lot safer from someone thrashing around in their sleep.

I agree. It has all the “classic” elements. It is a typical MSM story. The guy “could be” dangerous but so could anyone else. The fact that many accept the anti-gun MSM version of this is distressing and very telling. It won’t be long until all these people wringing there hands over this will be herded toward more and more restrictions on the 2nd amendment or completely revoking thereof.

Not ever a good idea.

Boy, everything is a Ron Paul rorschach test to you isn't it?

Com on, bro. This didn't pop up on your Ron Paul RSS feed?

of the things mentioned, what shouldn't he have been able to do?

Making flash powder in a urban townhome, putting all of his neighbors at risk... You don't see a problem with that?

It ain't no conspiracy theory. It's real, and they're going to totally wipe out WCW.

An anonymous tip about illegal fireworks led federal and county investigators to James L. Boka, 47, officials said.

The police wouldn't have even gotten involved had he not attracted the attention of his neighbors. Given the kind of pyrotechnical craziness that is reported to occur in the countryside from time to time, it is likely that twenty acres would sufficiently isolate the homestead and disperse/muffle the sound. (Actually 20 acres sounds kind of puny for a survivalist redoubt, come to think of it.)

That, of course, brings us back to the neighborhood where this occurred. I don't have a list of rules concerning being a successful urban survivalist, but I'm willing to bet not attracting attention to yourself would be towards the top.

But you are right in that, once the police are involved, they are going to give it to him with both barrels urban, suburban, or rural. The twelve year old kid with the guns wouldn't concern me (well, unless he has hit puberty...) since, once properly trained, they can handle a gun as responsibly as anyone else.

But the several hundred pounds of mystery chemicals would bother me. Prima fascia, that sounds like the home brewing of explosives and that is something I definitely do not want my next door neighbor doing in my townhouse complex.

Whew! I didn't believe you were inferring bad gun safety practices by parents.

As with most arrests, there is more details that the cops haven't yet revealed. It will be interesting to see what they are over the next couple of weeks.

I would suspect that as more details are revealed the suspect probably was a threat to himself and those around him. He's already been cited for breaking several laws. Someone (probably a concerned relative or close friend)contacted the cops, they didn't unearth this themselves.

A Two-fer for you. Anti-Paul and Anti-gun.

You just never quit. Further up thread, you spout "lock up your safety" type policies about "storing firearms unloaded".

In the middle of the night, you don't have time to wonder where the mag went, where your keys for your gun safe are, or which drawer of your nightstand you have it in.

But, of course, ignore the reality of your every increasing FedGov spinning out of control and just hack on the po-bucker making his own firecrackers...

Nice for the sheep to react without reading. They see Paul and assume it is a bash.. baa baa, paul is so abused, baa baa... no go back and read the thread and not where you paulites try to make everything about him and blindly think this is anti paul or anti gun.

"Always keep a gun unloaded until it is ready to use. Anyone with even the most basic NRA or gun safety training knows this."

That's just not true. Where did you hear such a silly thing?

It's from you, it mentions Paul, you mention approval of "lock up your safety"/"keep your kids ignorant" policies...

It fits your template...

NRA Gun Safety Rules.

The same rules can also be found in the US Army's 10 rules of firearm safety

..and the US Army field safety manual.

"I keep a gun unloaded with a clip next to it in a locked case under my bed. I can have the case unlocked and gun loaded in less that 20 seconds."

It's a magazine, not a clip. If you had any sort of respectable knowledge of firearms, you would know this.

Keeping your home defense weapon UNLOADED is just plain ridiculous. Your 20 seconds number is also ridiculous. I guarantee you that it would take much longer for you to bring your case out from under your bed, fiddle with the keys to get the lock open, and then insert a magazine and rack the slide.

Based on what you've posted so far, I don't think anyone should be listening to what you have to say on this subject.

Whatever... never mentioned keep your kids ignorant. The ‘lock up for safety’ is found in both the NRA safety requirements and the US Army field manual (linked in a previous post). The mention of Paul is neither negative or positive. Like most other things, this is far more of a rorschach test for you. As I mentioned to another poster, if you wonder why Paul was supposedly ignored in the media, look in the mirror. Even in a thread that is neutral on Paul, you all throw a hissy fit that it is a bash. Grow up.
