Wilson never cared one lick for the party, state, or city, only what was good for Pete Wilson.

I spent 18 years fighting that POS on the floor of the RSCC conventions.

I can bot believe how far left the R party has fallen in just a few short years. I have been voting since 1956 and this year is absolutely has the most dismal prospect for me as a conservative. I have contributed to Mac twice in this primary and when he wins I may move next door to the Wasp Man.

btw CCG, I see you have picked up his distinct dialect (Wilsonnegger?)...

Any fantasy that RINOs actually prefer conservative principles but advance their preferences out of pragmatism is hereby disabused.

RINOs are fascists in conservative drag.

Ponder this. What happens when society winds up turning to the same people time and again to run for office? They, by dint of being elected over and over again, become professional politicians. That is, politics has become all they are known for.

Then the follow-up questions: How rare is the person, fully immersed in their profession, who will work diligently to reduce the size of their institutions, the amount of money coming in to run it, and the number of tools at their disposal? The one who does aim for the reduction of these things is apt to be looked at in what way by his more institutionalized colleagues?

I've long ago stopped questioning what it means to be Republican in California (and now the nation) and have begun to question what it means to be conservative.

If these set of questions are too unsettling, too unconservative (heh) for most to talk about, then I fear there is no way out; no way ever to rally enough people who can reverse our decline.

"(Wilsonnegger?)..."

That is an excellent shorthand descriptor that Amerigomag came up with during Schwarztenegger's/Wilson's siezure of the 2006 Republican Primary so that SchwartzenFrauder couldn't be challenged in the Primary that he was certain to lose. Even some FReepers went to that February 2005 CAGOP CONvention and voted to endorse Arnoiled way, way early to prempt ANY challenge to the Trojan Horse that gets pillow talked by a creepy Kennedy!!!

Oh man! If'n you moves down here, you'll never aclimate to the bone dry Sierra-Nevada CONservancy!!! I mean, it's so wet up there in your beloved Humbolt County that your skin is probably wrinkled more from the perpetual moisture than from any aging process!!!(grin)

I'm willing to grant to even a "professional politician" a strong conservative label if he consistently battles all those years for GovernMental fiscal shrinkage and shrinkage of GovernMental EnvironMental bull spit in general!!!

When you are a Republican and Pete Wilson and Arnold Schwartzenegger and probably John McCain dispise you... Then by golly you elgible as an avowed and legitimate committed conservative for a campaign contribution in my book!!!

I realize there are more acid tests and I disagree with Tom McClintock on his weakness for "diversity" and "sovereignty" for the illegitimate (bleepin) Tribal Gamers, but that "sin" is covered by almost every other thing I've heard McClintock express himself regarding!!!

I can bot believe how far left the R party has fallen in just a few short years.

Somebody left the door open and let the wolf in. The wolf invited a few friends... who invited a few friends... who invited a few friends. The question is: is it too late to univite the wolves. ;-)

I have contributed to Mac twice in this primary and when he wins I may move next door to the Wasp Man.

LOL. Misery loves company? Or the start of an army to fight the liberalism?

CCG, I see you have picked up his distinct dialect (Wilsonnegger?)...

It seemed to fit in this case. I believe it was an Amerigomag creation, kept alive by several freepers. It does not lessen the appropriateness of alternatives such as SchwarzenKennedy, SchwarzenFraud and others. ;-)

What Pete means is that Tom is a conservative who would not back Pete's RINOesque actions while Governor, so of course he couldn't be counted on.

Pete Wilson -- a gem of an example of everything that is wrong with the GOP Big Tent RINO Party. Thanks for the reminder, Pete.

I do not disagree with a thing you just wrote SW.

What I am questioning is how badly we are served by old labels.

E.g.: The only thing a Liberal wants freedom FOR is for government to CONTROL everybody equally. It has come to mean the precise opposite of what liberal meant to the Founders.

So I've come around to questioning whether or not the label Conservative serves us well as a banner under which to do battle. This site is NOT "Free Conservatives" after all, it is "Free Republic."

Unlike liberal, conservative is too much like what it connotes -- one who conserves. You surely do NOT want to conserve what the CAGOP has become: the party of the Wilsonnegger.

Read the link at 47 above. I challenge those who claim to love liberty to debate the question. Resolved: "Conservatives" are Useless as Defenders of Libety.

I know you already feel that the GOP has gone too far left. But have conservatives too let things decay so much simply because they are too inclined to sit and wait, and wait, ... and wait? So far I haven't found anyone who is willing to defend conservatism. The best I have heard is that "conservatives are simply disorganized." Hah!

In the realm of RINO-Democrat alignment, the interchangeable jigsaw pieces fit very nicely with one another.

It spends 3 trillion dollars a year and not a damn thing gets "fixed".

Schwarzenegger did everything he could to distance himself from conservatives - McClintock & Poochigian. I was at some of those events where the governator all but threw these guys under the bus to save his own skin, disgusting.

Pete Wilson is still alive?

.. All joking aside: While I admire Wilson in some limited ways, he reminds me of Bush 41: Stood up to the worst excesses of the very far left, but pussed out on the meat-and-potatoes issues (raised taxes, primarily).

I think the issue before us is:

1) Was Wilson a typical Republican?
2) Is Wilson an instinctivec conservative?

From my perspective Pete Wilson was and is a quintessential politician who is driven by victory, with few core principles beyond self preservation.

At one time he was the champion of rent control in San Diego when it was the cause celeb. He then bludgeoned the legislature into a horrendous tax increases rather than control the excessive spending he initiated through his naive enthusiasm after two, record, GSP growth years . He then jumped on the let's blame non-voters for the trouble I've allowed and approved and rode 209 to a short lived victory.

You bet. If you couldn't retaliate with your vote, Wilson was sure to demonize you and blame you for his failed policies and flamboyant excesses.
