Two Democratic dynasties near the exit
Salon.com ^ | May 27, 2008 | Walter Shapiro

The sun-dappled image from August 1997 shimmers in memory. The two great Democratic political dynasties had set sail on carefree waters. Aboard the Mya as the schooner maneuvered its way out of Menemsha Harbor on Martha's Vineyard were the reigning Clintons and the radiant Kennedys. The news photographs, which mesh with my memory, show the president and the ruddy white-haired Massachusetts senator, along with a waving Hillary Clinton and the extended Kennedy clan, including Rep. Patrick Kennedy and daughter-of-Camelot Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.

Last week, 11 years after that in-happier-times snapshot, the curtain began to descend on the Kennedys and Clintons alike. Before the wrenching news of a brain tumor, there had always seemed something eternal about Ted Kennedy: the survivor, the eternal-flame keeper of the dream that never died, the last active link to the heady days of can-do 1960s liberalism...

Skim through this unremarkable political obituary on the Clinton and Kennedy dynasties to see why I'm bringing this to your attention: go to the "Read all letters on this article" link at the end. Enjoy the grandest, Toba-size eruption of lefty hatred I have ever seen, even counting all those rants against Bush, as the Clinton and Obama camps sling white-hot magma at each other.

Nuke the popcorn and sit yourself down for a classic!

But, didn’t you predict *Hillary winning? Now, she’s no longer the smartest person in the Milky Way, and the RATS are more than willing to throw her on the trash heap - just like the Lieberdood.

I’ll second your recommendation that the comments at the end of the article are a fun read.

the eternal-flame keeper of the dream that never died

You can tell which side they are on. Some of their grandiose dreams and schemes are my worst nightmares, they are on the wrong side of life issues but on the right side of history where we are rapidly spiralling into the abyss. And they have the gall to blame the Republicans. The latter aren't knights in shining armor, but their supposed screwups are nothing when stacked against the millions of unborn that have been murdered, ironically in Christian or formerly Christian countries. It is a terrible irony to me that mostly in Muslim countries is abortion outlawed, and where it is allowed, it is for more justifiable cause, faulty though they may be otherwise. Sometimes I think they are being used to scourge us, and I didn't get that idea from any tv preacher.

I don't understand why what they stand for seems so wrong to me mainly on life issues but also heavy taxation, giveaway programs, keeping people dependent, keeping people down and beholden to them, and not letting us drill our own oil. On some issues I could find middle ground with them, but they have gone too far off the deep end and blame Republicans for all the ills in society and the world.

The end of both Clintonism and its opposite -- Kennedy-style liberalism -- draws closer.

Huh? Opposites? JFK came in as what we might now call a "neoliberal." He was for tax cuts, remember? Bill Clinton gravitated towards a similar position after his big plans failed. It's only later when Teddie and Hillary found that road blocked that they became "old fashioned" liberals.

“.....the radiant Kennedys...” Does ‘radiant’ mean inebriated?

This line definitely required a barf alert.
