This wrong in so many ways. They have had a proud history in too many ways. For what it is worth, I am proud of our good friends down under...

“troops frustrated that they are not seeing enough combat. “

Perhaps it can be arranged

A bunch of kick-ass killers. Would rather have them on the flanks of U.S. warriors than any other bunch. Read the book “Prisoners of the Japanese.” They were the ones who knew what do with Nip war criminals better than the other Allies.

The mental attitude of gun “control” that has emasculated the Aussie populace has now weakened their Army, it appears!

I saw it years ago when it came out and had forgotten what an awesome film it was, and really enjoyed watching it the other night. But do yourself a favor, don’t go to IMDB and see all the lefty, American hating comments that people are making vis a vis this movie and parellels to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was sickmaking.

Actually this kind of INFERIORITY COMPLEX is a real driver for Aussie troops.

They felt they had to prove their mettle in WW-II and really threw themselves at the Bullets.

I think one of the battle in Turkey where Brits and Aussies were defeated, one of the reasons cited for huge loss of soldiers was the desire of Aussie troops to prove they got it.

Hope I am not mixing my history.

Few nations as young as Australia have such a distinguished military history.

Australia's assistance in the war on terror has been invaluable.

Australian soldiers may hold themselves to impossibly high standards, but American patriots admire them deeply.

I am thinking Gallipoli? Even Ataturk called them heroes. He said:

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours... You the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. Having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.

I read on Debka that the French Very Special Forces are deployed as well:

Giving our brave OZ allies in uniform the benefit of the doubt I dare say to say they are “ashamed” of anything is quite an exaggeration.

I gently suggest that Gen. Leahy stop short-changing his troopers. Aussie infantry is awesome, some of the finest in the world - and perfectly capable of adapting to the more specialized needs of counter-insurgency warfare.

I know the General was exaggerating the case to make a point, but these aren't guys in red coats with cross-straps duking it with another King's army. Yes, modern conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan put a premium on small-unit tactics and highly educated individual soldiers. That need not be the exclusive purview of Special Forces, and in application is isn't. If there were any infantry in the world I'd figure would be up to it it'd be the Aussies. No wonder they're frustrated.

But this business of being "ashamed" to wear the uniform is BS. Not that uniform, mate.

BUTCHERED TO MAKE A DUTCHMAN'S HOLIDAY by Harry ("Breaker") Morant

In prison cell I sadly sit, A d__d crest-fallen chappie! And own to you I feel a bit- A little bit - unhappy!

It really ain't the place nor time To reel off rhyming diction - But yet we'll write a final rhyme Whilst waiting cru-ci-fixion!

No matter what "end" they decide - Quick-lime or "b'iling ile," sir? We'll do our best when crucified To finish off in style, sir!

But we bequeath a parting tip For sound advice of such men, Who come across in transport ship To polish off the Dutchmen!

If you encounter any Boers You really must not loot 'em! And if you wish to leave these shores, For pity's sake, DON'T SHOOT 'EM!!

And if you'd earn a D.S.O., Why every British sinner Should know the proper way to go Is: "ASK THE BOER TO DINNER!"

Let's toss a bumper down our throat, - Before we pass to Heaven, And toast: "The trim-set petticoat We leave behind in Devon."

At its end the manuscript is described - The Last Rhyme and Testament of Tony Lumpkin - First published in The Bulletin, 19 April 1902.

Wonderful story-—we are also very proud of Australia’s contributions to world freedom. And sooo grateful for their sacrifices.

I think one of the battle in Turkey where Brits and Aussies were defeated, one of the reasons cited for huge loss of soldiers was the desire of Aussie troops to prove they got it.

As Dawnsblood points out, it was the Battle of the Nek in the Gallipoli campaign that made the ANZAC forces famous.

One Australian unit of 600 men suffered 324 casualties and one New Zealand unit of 760 suffered 711 casualties.

The main reason why so many lives were lost is because an Australian colonel became confused as to how successfully the attack was going and continued the assault despite the enormous casualty rate.

It wasn't the Australians trying to compensate for feelings of inadequacy - just bad field communications.

Thanks for sharing that info. Sincerely appreciate your knowledge.

I didn’t mention that as some sort of insult. Only as a compliment, in the sense that Aussies always seem to have a chip on their shoulder. I guess how their nation began....

I saw that being discussed on History Channel, and know those were not some liberals badmouthing soldiers, but serious History Professors......

So I mentioned it here.....

Cheers!

I just watched Breaker Morant the other night. What a fantastic movie!

It's a highly entertaining movie, but it obscures the real Harry Morant - he was a much darker and more troubling individual in real life.
