Vermeiren said the pilot told rescue authoritieshe heard a large noise while trying to take off just after midday. It was not yet clear what caused the crash. What might have caused a large noise?

Most likely cargo shifting in the bay. The most likely culprit for this is someone loading the cargo improperly, which was either improperly balanced in the first place or that broke free, slid around, and altered the balance of the plane.

My apology if your statement was being facetious, given the way the plane was broken like an egg.

What might have caused a large noise? Blown engine? I was once on a plane whose middle engine apparently self-destructed shortly after takeoff. There was a boom and the entire plane shook - a minute or so later I realized we were no longer climbing. Then the captain came on the PA.
